Job Summary:

NOTE: Employee will need to receive crane operation endorsement within a year of transferring to the bridge crew.
This position performs general and technical bridge carpentry work requiring technical knowledge of bridge, guardrail, drainage structure, and concrete construction as well as crane and heavy equipment operation experience. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Bridge and Roadside Maintenance Supervisor or his/her designee.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Replaces decking, railings, bulkheads, wing walls, etc.
- Builds, repairs and replaces culverts, prepares and installs piping.
- Operates pickups, trucks, and other equipment; changes tires, fuels equipment, makes minor repairs.
- Does crane rigging, relief driver on crane.
- Prepares job site for work by placing signs and closing work areas.
- Builds and repairs cyclone, barbed wire and other R/W fences.
- Rebuilds and repairs timber bridges to include: install stringers and timber decking, railings.
- Installs concrete bulkhead plank.
- Rebuilds and repairs concrete bridges - to include: form, pour and finish abutment walls and footing, and installs decking and rail system.
- Back fills work and places rip rap as needed.
- Installs large diameter culverts.
- Performs various concrete work to include: box culverts; wing walls; retaining walls using various form systems, gates, snaptie, symons, etc.
- Forms, pours and finishes flatwork, sidewalk and curb and approach aprons.
- Constructs wood framed, stud and pole type buildings.
- Installs and maintains various fencing types on County Right of Way.
- Installs and repairs various guardrail and cable rail systems.
- Performs tree removal as needed.
- Drives to and from job site with appropriate tools and material to complete assigned work in crane operation .
- Shovels, sweeps, cleans bridges, and clears brush from bridge ends or stream beds. Cleans, repairs tools.
- Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of work experience
- Successful completion of carpentry school/apprenticeship may substitute for 1 year of experience.
- One-year verifiable heavy equipment experience in the operation of backhoe, excavator and other related equipment.
- Must possess at the time of appointment, or be able to obtain the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) Certification w/designations: TSS and TLL.
- The ability to acquire and maintain Trenching, Confined Spaces, Fall Protection and Rigging Certifications.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License at time of hire and for the duration of employment.
- Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement (CDL) preferred or must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire

- Knowledge of bridge repair or construction.

- Skilled in the operation of various heavy equipment and tools.
- Skilled in construction techniques related to bridge or general construction.
- Skilled in form and flat work concrete construction.
- Ability to operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and skilled manner.
- Ability to follow written or verbal instructions in a responsible and efficient manager.
- Ability to complete work assignments with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
- Ability to perform heavy physical labor for extended periods of time.
- Ability to operate a variety of tools, including but not limited to, chain saws and hand tools, jack hammers, drills, grinders, cutting torches, air compressors, generators, man lifts, brush chippers, and bucket trucks.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and project specifications.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work environment is primarily outdoors; and requires occasional travel within the County, exposing the associate to weather extremes, various forms of precipitation and the hazards associated with travel on public roads.

Total Compensation:
$67,598 - $94,142 Annually
Total compensation is an estimate based upon base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, and leave). The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.
