Full Job Description

Cheney United Methodist Church seeks a collaborative and creative Director of Music Ministry to help lead and shape the musical life of our congregation. This position supports worship through music leadership, choir direction, accompaniment, and collaboration in worship planning. The advertised $12,000 would inlcude being the pianist for Sunday morning as well.

Our worship life blends traditional United Methodist liturgy with creative and contextual elements. Most of the year follows a traditional service grounded in the United Methodist Book of Worship and hymnals, while part of the year includes creative worship series incorporating themed and contemporary music (e.g., film and pop-culture series).

The Director of Music Ministry works closely with the Pastor, Worship Team, and volunteer musicians/vocalists to foster meaningful, participatory worship that welcomes all generations.

Position Details

Compensation: $25-$30 per hour depending on education and experience
Expected Hours: Approximately 8 hours per week on average; hours will vary depending on liturgical season
Employment Type: Part-time, hourly position
Supervisor: Pastor, in consultation with the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)

Typical weekly schedule includes:

Worship Planning Meeting – 1.5 hours
Choir Rehearsal – 1.5 hours (Wednesdays at 7:00 PM; seasonal break July–September)
Music planning and preparation – 2–3 hours
Sunday worship leadership – approximately 2 hours

Additional seasonal services (Christmas Eve and Holy Week/Easter) are included within regular responsibilities.

Additional compensation provided by mutual agreement for events such as Weddings, Memorial and funeral services.

We can pay hourly or a flat rate. We are also looking for an accompanist for Sunday morning and we could combine that position of Music Director and Pianist.

Key Responsibilities

Worship Leadership & Collaboration

Collaborate weekly with the Pastor and Tech Team in worship planning meetings.
Help select music that supports sermon themes, liturgical seasons, and congregational participation.
Lead congregational singing through accompaniment and/or visible leadership as appropriate.
Support a blended worship style including hymns, choral music, and contemporary worship songs.
Coordinate music for Communion Sundays and special worship elements.

Choir

Direct and rehearse the choir (approximately 8–12 members).
Select choir music appropriate to worship themes in collaboration with the Pastor.
Encourage musical growth, participation, and community within the choir.
Recruit and welcome new choir members.

Musical Accompaniment

Provide piano accompaniment for choir.
Accompany soloists and ensemble music as needed.
May provide piano accompaniment for Sunday worship.

Musical Ministry

Encourage participation from musicians of all ages, including mentoring student musicians/vocalists involved in contemporary music leadership.
Support collaboration with existing volunteer-led ensembles (e.g., bell choir, guitarist).
Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive musical environment grounded in sound theology that strengthens the worship experience.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

Participate in a spirit of shared ministry consistent with United Methodist values.
Maintain a collaborative and flexible approach to worship leadership.
Support participation in regional United Methodist or community music events when appropriate.

Substitute Coverage

When unavailable, substitute arrangements will be coordinated by church leadership (Pastor/SPRC).

Qualifications

Required:

Ability to lead congregational singing and direct a choir
Proficiency in piano accompaniment
Basic music theory and sight-reading skills
Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
Enthusiasm for working with people of all ages and musical abilities

Preferred:

Experience in church or liturgical music settings
Ability to work across traditional and contemporary musical styles
Experience mentoring volunteer musicians/vocalists

Pay: $12,000.00 per year
