Long-term Substitute Position for Musical Theater Department, Half-day Program - from Early September expecting duration for 20 WK
General Purpose:
Under the direction of the Musical Theater Department Head and Administration to be a practicing artist who will implement curriculum and deliver instructional lessons in the discipline of Acting. Experience working with high school students of all skill levels is beneficial to a candidate's successful transition into our unique pre-professional intensive arts program. This position is for the first semester of the 2026-2027 SY.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Identifies long and short-term individual student and class objectives, prepares and writes lesson plans and student performance evaluations. Selects appropriate learning materials including texts, audio visual materials, etc.
2. Provides a safe environment for learning, follows program procedures, maintains and submits records of attendance and student achievement in a timely fashion.
3. Provides instruction to students using methods and activities which best meet predetermined objectives including using community resources when applicable and available. Facilitates student growth in developmental, affective and cognitive domains by promoting student participation in the learning experience, promoting analytical thinking, teaching effective work habits and study skills and providing opportunities for individual achievement.
4. Applies appropriate diagnostic and assessment techniques which inform students of the expectations for assessment. Assesses student accomplishment of objectives and reviews assessment results with Musical Theater Department Head.
5. Interacts with students, school counselors, Musical Theater Department Head to ensure the safety, progress and achievement of students.
6. Collaborates with Musical Theater faculty members on department projects and presentations
7. Attends occasional evening and/or weekend rehearsals and performances.
The following credentials are preferred:
Experience teaching all skill levels in acting. Must have diagnostic and assessment skills. Must be knowledgeable in the application of subject matter and instructional technology such as Google Classroom and Zoom Meeting platform. Training for online teaching tool applications available.
Education requirements:
BS/BA degree in Education or a BFA with emphasis in appropriate discipline or equivalent preferred but not required. Eligibility for a Connecticut State Department of Education Adjunct Arts Instructor Permit is required. Requirements for permit eligibility: (1) hold a bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education accredited by the Board of Governors of Higher Education, or regionally accredited, (2) have a minimum of three years of work experience in the arts or one year of work and two years of specialized schooling related to the applicant's artistic specialty, and (3) at least one hundred eighty hours of cumulative experience working with children in a private or public setting, including, but not limited to, afterschool programs, group lessons, children's theater, dance studio lessons, and artist-in-residence programs, or at least two years' experience as a full-time faculty member at an institution of higher education or been employed by an eligible inter-district magnet school prior to July 1, 2011 and for at least one year.
