Position Summary
As the Laboratory Technician at Health Hub Clinic, you are the technical anchor of our point-of-care and diagnostic laboratory services. This role bridges direct patient interactions—such as expert phlebotomy—with high-precision technical processing, playing a critical role in providing fast, clear diagnostic answers for our members.
Unlike high-volume commercial labs where samples are reduced to barcode stickers, you will work directly within our Direct Primary Care (DPC) model. You will know our members, ensure a gentle and reassuring phlebotomy experience, and maintain seamless laboratory workflows that empower our providers to deliver proactive, data-driven primary care.
Key ResponsibilitiesSpecimen Collection & Patient Care
- Phlebotomy Excellence: Perform safe, accurate, and comfortable venipunctures, capillary punctures, and blood collection on adult and pediatric patients.
- Patient Preparation: Instruct patients clearly on proper specimen collection protocols (e.g., fasting requirements, timed draws, clean-catch urine, stool collection).
- Patient Comfort & Safety: Create a calm, reassuring environment for anxious or needle-averse patients, monitoring for post-phlebotomy reactions.
Point-of-Care & Clinical Laboratory Testing
- In-House Diagnostics: Execute point-of-care (POC) testing and moderate-complexity assays according to established protocols (e.g., CBC, A1c, Lipid Panels, CMP/BMP, Urinalysis, Strep, Flu, COVID, Cardiac Biomarkers).
- Specimen Processing: Centrifuge, aliquot, preserve, and store blood, tissue, and body fluid specimens strictly following stability and temperature requirements.
- Reference Lab Management: Prepare, log, and package specimens for send-out testing to reference laboratories, managing pickup schedules and courier logistics.
Quality Control, Compliance & Maintenance
- Quality Assurance: Perform, record, and evaluate daily Quality Control (QC) for all lab instrumentation, troubleshooting out-of-range results prior to running member samples.
- Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine calibration, maintenance, cleaning, and safety checks on centrifuges, analyzers, refrigerators, and incubation equipment.
- CLIA & OSHA Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, and universal precautions guidelines; maintain up-to-date equipment logs, SDS binder, and biohazard waste disposal records.
Result Tracking & Operational Workflow
- EMR & LIS Integration: Accurately document, upload, and verify lab results within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) / Laboratory Information System (LIS) with high attention to detail.
- Abnormal Result Triage: Immediately identify and flag critical values or panic results, escalating them directly to the ordering provider following established clinic protocols.
- Inventory & Supply Management: Track laboratory reagent and supply inventory, monitor lot numbers and expiration dates, and oversee proper storage conditions (including continuous temperature logging).
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), or completion of an accredited phlebotomy/lab technician program.
- Current Certification as an MLT, CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician), or equivalent through ASCP, AMT, or NHA (or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire).
- Current BLS/CPR certification.
- 1+ year of hands-on laboratory processing and phlebotomy experience in an outpatient, clinic, or hospital setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture techniques across diverse patient demographics.
- Basic understanding of CLIA regulations, OSHA safety standards, and infection control protocols.
- Proficient with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
- Reliable attendance and ability to work in-person during operating hours.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within an internal medicine, or outpatient family practice.
- Advanced experience running point-of-care clinical chemistry and hematology bench analyzers.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, specimen stability requirements, and reference lab processing.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods during shift.
- Manual dexterity and fine motor skills necessary for venipuncture, micropipetting, and operating lab machinery.
- Visual acuity to read fine print, inspect micro-specimens, color changes, and machine displays.
- Occasional lifting up to 30 lbs. (laboratory supply boxes, reagent containers).
