The Performing Arts Program Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield's performing arts programming across multiple Club locations. This grant-funded position exists to inspire creativity, confidence, collaboration, and self-expression through high-quality arts experiences for youth ages 5–18.
The coordinator will oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of BGCS's signature performing arts initiatives, including the annual musical production, Club Crescendos youth choir, annual fashion show, talent showcases, and other performing arts opportunities. Working closely with Club staff, volunteers, community artists, and local partners, this individual will create meaningful experiences that help young people discover their talents, strengthen leadership skills, and develop confidence both on and off the stage.
This position is supported through grant funding from the Schneider Foundation. Continued employment is contingent upon continued grant funding and organizational needs.
Job Requirements
● Passion for youth development and the performing arts.
● Experience leading youth in theater, music, choir, dance, fashion, or other performing arts.
● Excellent organizational and project management skills.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Ability to motivate, mentor, and positively engage children and teens.
● Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends for rehearsals and performances.
● Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a Missouri Class E license within 90 days.
● Ability to travel between BGCS Club locations.
● Bachelor's degree in Performing Arts, Music Education, Theatre, Fine Arts, Education, Youth Development, or a related field.
● Experience directing youth productions or performances.
● Experience working in nonprofit organizations or youth-serving agencies.
● Experience managing volunteers.
● Grant-funded program experience.
● Experience collaborating with community partners.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership
● Design, implement, and evaluate engaging performing arts programming for youth ages 5–18.
● Develop programming that incorporates music, theater, dance, spoken word, fashion, creative movement, and performance.
● Foster creativity, confidence, teamwork, leadership, communication, and self-expression through arts-based experiences.
● Create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every young person feels safe to participate and grow.
● Adapt programming to meet the developmental needs and interests of members across multiple age groups.
Signature Performing Arts Programs
● Annual Musical Production
○ Coordinate auditions, rehearsals, casting, costumes, set planning, volunteers, and performances.
● Club Crescendos Choir
○ Lead rehearsals and prepare members for performances throughout the community.
● Annual Fashion Show
○ Coordinate youth participation in design, styling, modeling, choreography, and production.
● Talent Shows & Community Performances
○ Organize additional showcases that celebrate youth creativity throughout the year.
Program Development
● Assess performing arts interests and needs across all BGCS Club locations.
● Develop new programming opportunities based on member interests.
● Work collaboratively with Unit Directors to ensure performing arts opportunities are available throughout the organization.
● Develop seasonal calendars, lesson plans, and performance schedules.
● Maintain high-quality, engaging programming aligned with Boys & Girls Clubs of America's youth development philosophy.
Youth Development
● Build positive, supportive relationships with Club members.
● Encourage youth voice and leadership throughout all programming.
● Help members build confidence through performance opportunities.
● Promote teamwork, responsibility, resilience, and creativity.
● Create physically and emotionally safe learning environments.
● Model positive behavior and uphold all BGCS safety standards and policies.
Community Partnerships
● Develop relationships with local theaters, musicians, dancers, artists, designers, colleges, and community organizations.
● Recruit and coordinate volunteers, guest artists, and mentors.
● Collaborate with community partners to expand performing arts opportunities for Club members.
● Work alongside the Development Department to identify sponsorships, donations, and community support for performances and productions.
Program Administration
● Maintain accurate attendance records and participation data.
● Track program outcomes and member progress.
● Complete monthly reports and grant reporting requirements.
● Collect stories, testimonials, photographs, and success stories demonstrating program impact.
● Assist in evaluating program effectiveness through participant feedback and outcome measurements.
Event & Production Management
● Coordinate all logistics for performances and productions.
● Manage rehearsal schedules.
● Coordinate costumes, props, music, scripts, equipment, and supplies.
● Assist with marketing performances in collaboration with the Development and Communications teams.
● Ensure performances provide positive experiences for members, families, and the community.
Grant Stewardship
● Support successful implementation of Schneider Foundation grant objectives.
● Ensure grant-funded activities remain aligned with approved outcomes and timelines.
● Monitor use of grant-funded supplies and materials.
● Assist with data collection and reporting required by funding partners.
● Participate in evaluation efforts that measure youth confidence, creativity, teamwork, and engagement.
Resource Management
● Maintain performing arts equipment, costumes, instruments, props, and rehearsal spaces.
● Manage inventory and recommend future supply needs.
● Ensure materials are organized, safe, and properly maintained.
Professional Development
● Participate in professional development related to youth development, performing arts education, and nonprofit programming.
● Stay informed on current trends and best practices in arts education.
● Share knowledge and best practices with BGCS staff.
Other Duties
● Support organization-wide events and initiatives as needed.
● Transport members when appropriate and in accordance with BGCS transportation policies.
● Perform other duties as assigned.
