Starting Salary Range $97,717 - $114,315 Annual (Management Salary Grade 21)

Salary/Compensation Statement:

The position’s full salary range is $97,717 to $144,645. New employees cannot be placed higher than $114,315 (step 5 on the salary grade) due to internal equity. The application is used to determine the initial salary placement for selected candidates. All employment and education history will be considered.
Our Management Benefits package includes a generous contribution toward medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability as well as paid sick leave and vacation time.
Lane Community College is considered a qualifying public employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, full-time employees working at the College may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Questions regarding your loan eligibility should be directed to your loan servicer or to the US Department of Education.

Required Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Graphic Design or related field.

Required Experience:

Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, journalism, media relations, or public affairs.
Demonstrated storytelling experience, including digital video, multimedia, or broadcast journalism.
Supervisory experience in a communications, newsroom, or marketing environment.Experience in higher education or public-sector communications.
Experience mentoring student interns or early-career professionals.
Experience supporting crisis and emergency communications

Position Purpose:

The Director of Communications supports institution-wide communications, public relations and storytelling efforts that elevate Lane Community College’s mission, reputation, and enrollment goals. The position advances the college’s strategic priorities through the creation of compelling, human-centered storytelling, strong media engagement, and integrated digital, print, and emerging media channels. Reporting to the Senior Advisor for Strategic Communications, the Director manages positive narrative development, earned media strategy, brand storytelling, and large-scale content initiatives, through both direct content creation and coordination of outside vendors, staff and student interns/student workers. The Director supervises department communications staff, Printing and Graphics services, and student interns in the Design Media Center (DMC) mentoring students to ensure alignment between institutional priorities and applied learning experiences. The Director also serves as a backup spokesperson/PIO in the absence of the Senior Advisor, and supports crisis and emergency communication planning and response.

Essential Functions:

Provide leadership for the College’s integrated communications, public relations, storytelling, and creative services functions in support of the College’s mission, Strategic Plan, enrollment goals, student success initiatives, and institutional reputation.
Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive proactive communications strategy that strengthens public awareness of Lane Community College through earned, owned, and shared media channels while ensuring alignment with institutional priorities.
Lead the College’s institutional storytelling strategy by identifying, developing, and promoting compelling stories that highlight student success, employee excellence, academic innovation, workforce partnerships, community impact, and institutional achievements across digital, print, broadcast, podcast, video, and emerging media platforms.
Serve as the College’s secondary spokesperson and backup Public Information Officer (PIO), providing media relations leadership, responding to media inquiries, cultivating relationships with journalists, and supporting crisis and emergency communications planning, training, and response.
Supervise the Communications Specialist, Multimedia Coordinator, Printing & Graphics operations, and the Design Media Center (DMC), fostering an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented communications team.
Provide leadership, mentorship, and operational oversight of student employees and co-op interns within the Design Media Center, integrating meaningful applied learning experiences with institutional communications and creative service needs.
Direct the development and production of high-quality institutional communications including publications, annual reports, magazines, videos, podcasts, photography, newsletters, websites, social media content, and other multimedia assets that strengthen the College’s reputation and brand.
Collaborate closely with the Marketing and Recruitment staff to ensure communications strategy, storytelling, enrollment marketing, advertising, and brand management are coordinated, consistent, and mutually reinforcing.
Protect and strengthen the College’s visual identity, messaging, and brand standards by providing creative direction and communications oversight for institutional publications, digital communications, multimedia productions, and major public-facing initiatives.
Research, procure, manage, and evaluate contracts with consultants, creative agencies, photographers, videographers, writers, designers, media partners, and other communication service providers as needed.
Develop communication standards, editorial guidelines, and storytelling practices that ensure messaging is accurate, accessible, inclusive, and reflective of Lane Community College’s values and commitment to equity.
Establish measurable communications goals and key performance indicators; monitor media coverage, audience engagement, communications effectiveness, reputation metrics, and emerging trends to support continuous improvement and data-informed decision making.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information while exercising sound professional judgment in communications involving personnel matters, student issues, legal concerns, emergencies, and other confidential institutional matters.
Ensure departmental compliance with College policies, accreditation expectations, affirmative action and equal employment opportunity requirements, safety practices, accessibility standards, and applicable state and federal laws.
Promote an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative workplace that supports employee engagement, professional development, innovation, and student learning.
Participate in institutional committees, strategic initiatives, accreditation activities, and emergency preparedness efforts.
Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

Work is conducted primarily in an office or studio environment with extended periods of computer use.
This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that include office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors.
This position requires that an employee is able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day.
This position may work with individuals who may be in crisis, have difficulty tracking, or in need of mental health support.
Work may require transporting or lifting of multimedia equipment up to 40 pounds.
