JOB/POSITION TITLE: CDL Bus Operator (Free & Paid CDL training)
DEPARTMENT NAME: Transportation
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the immediate supervision of the Transit Supervisors, the Bus Operator functions as a professional bus driver for RTA by providing safe, efficient, and quality door through door (or as otherwise directed) transportation service to customers with disabilities. Transports customers by operating any type of approved bus assigned to regularly scheduled routes and special service routes while observing route time schedules, safety rules and regulations, and State and Municipal traffic laws. Responsible for providing exceptional customer service by responding to customer inquiries and assisting customers with various transportation needs, including assisting persons with disabilities onto and off of the bus to secure wheelchair with safety restraints as required.
No CDL? No problem! Paid training is provided for CDL license. (Candidate is responsible to obtain the CDL Permit)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates assigned bus to transport customers; complies with applicable State and Municipal laws, safety regulations, RTA policies and Greater Dayton RTA Employee Standards of performance.
- Provides exceptional customer service by responding to customer inquiries and assisting customers with disabilities onto and off of the wheelchair lift and with safety restraints as required.
- Greets customers in a courteous, professional manner; answers service-related questions.
- Communicates with passengers and management effectively.
- Knowledgeable of RTA service area.
- Maintains schedule time points, uses bus communication system to communicate delays and unusual events to Dispatch.
- Loads and unloads wheelchairs and ensures they are well secured.
- Must be able to frequently enter and exit the bus to assist and provide door through door service to all customers.
- Collects fares from customers boarding the revenue vehicle.
- Completes routine reports as required.
- Requires punctuality and good attendance habits.
- Demonstrates ability to deal with unforeseen circumstances, or delays, peacefully and professionally, uses advance driving techniques to better improve time management and safety.
- Performs defective vehicle inspections and wheelchair ramp cycling, as required.
- Operates fare collection equipment to ensure proper payment of fare and use of fare instruments; accurately enters information into fare box.
- Provides assistance to customers with disabilities; secures passenger wheelchairs and/or scooters and other mobility devises as required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Bus is usually climate controlled. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Some exposure to outside weather conditions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Able to sit for long periods of time, possess good hearing and able to lift up to 50lbs, manipulate wheelchairs and bound passengers, and good eyesight (20/40). Continued movement of arms, legs and hands.
- Flexibility- able to turn body easily. Ability to reach and use equipment with both arms, bend over easily (to lock in wheelchairs).
POSITION TYPE & EXPECTED SCHEDULE: Full-time position that works varied shifts and hours including holidays and weekends. Must be available to work mandatory overtime to include, but not limited to, early mornings, evenings and weekends if and when needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED certificate. An equivalent combination of educational achievement/coursework and relevant work experience may be considered qualifying in lieu of education and/or experience.
- One (1) year of driving experience.
- A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B with Passenger Endorsement, or a ability to obtain a valid Ohio Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) is required prior to the first day of employment.
- Must be able to pass the DOT Drug and Alcohol Test, DOT Physical Assessment and Background Check requirements for this position.
- Must have steady work history.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Strong customer service skills and good communication skills are required at all times.
Must verify the past three (3) year’s driving record and meet the following criteria:
- No OMVI or DUI in last five (5) years.
- No more than one (1) driving related suspension in a rolling 24-month period.
- No more than four (4) points on your driving record.
- No more than two (2) moving violations in a rolling 36-month period.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is an ATU position with an hourly pay of $20.70 for CDL Bus Operator.
