Incumbents in this position perform airfield maintenance duties and coordinate and lead airfield maintenance workers in the repair and maintenance of runways, ramps, taxiways and grounds. Work involves shift, weekend and holiday assignments; therefore candidates must be available for overtime, mandatory 24-hour snow call and shift work.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Serves as team or project leader/coordinator on airfield projects and assumes responsibility and accountability for the work and supervision of crew members
- Guides the work assignments of co-workers/crew members to assist the supervisory staff with timely completion of the assigned work
- Trains co-workers on job related tasks, practices and procedures
- Provides input into service ratings, performance evaluations and potential disciplinary matters
- Orders supplies and materials
- Inspects airfield conditions
- Performs snow removal operations
- Make and enter reports into work order tracking system
- Works outdoors for long periods of time in adverse weather conditions
- Operates all equipment to maintain a safe Airport under FAA Rules and Regulations, and keep the Airport certification up to operational standards
- Performs general construction duties, i.e., carpentry work, iron work, welding, painting, and all other maintenance related to airfield

- Data Utilization: Requires the ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent action in relation to these computational operations.
- Human Interaction: Requires the ability to persuade, convince, influence, train and monitor the work of co-workers in favor of a desired outcome. Requires the ability to act as a lead person.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as loaders, motor graders, trucks, tractors, sweepers, backhoe, mowers, carpentry tools, mechanic’s hand tools, welder, de-icing equipment, salt spreader, pavement saw, snow blower, sand blaster, painting equipment, forklift and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as safety regulations, blueprints, diagrams, inspection reports, materials delivery sheets, vehicle maintenance manuals and general operating manuals.
- Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentage and decimals.
- Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
- Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties that may be subject to frequent change.
- Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents.
- Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to exert regular and sustained moderate to heavy physical effort with an emphasis on which involves climbing and balancing stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials weighing one hundred (100) pounds; and may occasionally involve objects and materials over one hundred pounds (100).
- Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of shapes to clearly distinguish objects and sounds to detect equipment malfunctions and communicate with others.
Other Requirements
- Must be available to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- A ten year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of airfield runways, taxiways, ramps and grounds.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at the time of filing application and while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with Passenger Bus and Tank Vehicle endorsements upon completion of the working test period as a condition of employment. Must present proof of license requirements upon request.

Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
