Duties Description Conduct FA-CPR & PROMOTE training for new and current staff
- Travel within the Long Island Region to deliver training (Infrequent travel).
- Conduct and assist with all aspects of New Employee orientation including but not limited to delivery of material, attendance monitoring, and scheduling of outside instructors
- Participate as a member of the Direct Support Development Council
- Assist with the tracking of probationary DSA & DA-1 competency evaluations
- Ensure adherence to the Code of Conduct/Competencies
- Conduct Statewide Learning Management System (SLMS) data entry
- Conduct supervisory training
- Assist staff in the completion of mandatory online training as requested
- Informs employees of available educational and training opportunities
- Maintains records/rosters of all training activities
- Maintain materials necessary for training
- Assist with classroom and equipment setup
- Provide ongoing support to training classes
- Travel as needed to support training needs in and outside New York City
- Liaison with program operations to assess and coordinate continuing education
- Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor
- Assists higher-level staff development specialists in the planning, organization, and development of facility training programs

Minimum Qualifications Open Competitive:
Training Specialist Trainee 1 Mental Hygiene, NS (equivalent to SG-14):
Four years of experience developing and delivering major segments of institution and community training programs to improve the knowledge and abilities of those caring for and treating individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities in institutional and community settings.
Training Specialist Trainee 2 Mental Hygiene, NS (equivalent to SG-16):
Five years of experience developing and delivering major segments of institution and community training programs to improve the knowledge and abilities of those caring for and treating individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities in institutional and community settings.
Training Specialist 1 Mental Hygiene, SG-18:
Six years of experience developing and delivering major segments of institution and community training programs to improve the knowledge and abilities of those caring for and treating individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities in institutional and community settings.
Substitution:
An associate degree may substitute for two years of experience; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for four years of experience; a master’s degree may substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate may substitute for six years of experience.
Competitive:
Candidates must be reachable for appointment on the Current Civil Service Eligible List, Professional Careers Opportunity (PCO) or Public Administration Traineeship Transition (PATT). Appointment may be made at the traineeship level.
Transfer:
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/c status in the posted title and be eligible for lateral transfer; OR be eligible to transfer via Section 70.1, 70.4, or 52.6 of Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in an advancement of more than two salary grades.

55 B/C Qualifications:
- Possess the minimum qualifications for this title as established by the Department of Civil Service and listed on the most recent exam announcement.
- Meet the applicable minimal mental and/or physical requirements for the job (with a reasonable accommodation, if necessary).

Additional Comments This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non-competitive appointment. This means that you do not need to take an exam to qualify, but you do need to meet the minimum qualifications of the title.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status. You will not have to take an exam to gain permanent competitive status.
- Appointments may also be made at the Training Specialist Trainee Mental Hygiene levels. Candidates hired at the entry-level title (Training Specialist Trainee 1 Mental Hygiene) may be advanced to the full-performance level (Training Specialist 1 Mental Hygiene) following satisfactory completion of two-years of service.
Salary range listed below encompasses the hiring rate of a Training Specialist Trainee 1 Mental Hygiene through the job rate of a Training Specialist 1 Mental Hygiene.
- Training Specialist Trainee 1 Mental Hygiene: $57,764*
- Training Specialist Trainee 2 Mental Hygiene: $63,994*
- Training Specialist 1 Mental Hygiene: $70,951* - $89,138*
- Amounts include Downstate adjustment ($4,000).
- If you are currently a New York State employee serving in a permanent competitive qualifying title and eligible for a transfer via Section 70.1 or 52.6 of the Civil Service Law, you may be appointed to this title as a permanent competitive employee.
- The assignment of PS&T employees will be made in accordance with any agreed upon Memorandum of Understanding between PEF and the local DDSO regarding the posting of job vacancies.
