(SCD) is developing advanced single-crystal CVD diamond materials for quantum sensing, semiconductor devices, radiation detection, photonics, and harsh-environment applications.Our work combines plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, proprietary diamond-growth processes, quantum-material engineering, and space-based manufacturing. SCD is currently executing and developing programs involving NASA, NSF, commercial space partners, and national-security applications.We are seeking an Electrical Engineer who is comfortable working in a small, technically ambitious R&D environment and wants to help turn experimental systems into reliable, testable hardware.The PositionThe Electrical Engineer will support the design, construction, integration, troubleshooting, and operation of SCD’s diamond-growth reactors, experimental test equipment, sensor systems, and supporting laboratory infrastructure.This is a practical engineering role. The successful candidate will work closely with SCD’s scientists, mechanical engineers, controls specialists, vendors, and technical leadership. Responsibilities may range from circuit and control-system design to instrument integration, data acquisition, hardware debugging, documentation, and support for spaceflight-oriented experiments.Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, and troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems used in diamond-growth and materials-processing equipment.
- Support high-voltage, high-current, RF, plasma, vacuum, thermal, and electromagnetic subsystems.
- Develop and integrate control panels, power-distribution systems, interlocks, sensors, instrumentation, and safety circuits.
- Assist with PLC, embedded-control, and automated process-control systems.
- Select and integrate laboratory instruments, power supplies, sensors, data-acquisition equipment, and communication interfaces.
- Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, bills of materials, test procedures, and system documentation.
- Diagnose hardware, grounding, noise, signal-integrity, EMI/EMC, and equipment-integration issues.
- Support prototype radiation detectors, quantum-sensing systems, and associated readout electronics.
- Participate in laboratory testing, system commissioning, experimental runs, and collection of engineering data.
- Coordinate with suppliers and fabrication partners to procure or manufacture specialized components.
- Support the preparation of technical reports, design reviews, government-program deliverables, and future flight-hardware documentation.
- Help establish disciplined engineering practices as SCD moves from research prototypes toward repeatable systems and commercial hardware.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Practical experience designing, assembling, testing, or troubleshooting electrical hardware.
- Ability to read and produce electrical schematics and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, sensors, power supplies, and data-acquisition systems.
- Experience using standard electrical test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, and related diagnostic tools.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently while communicating clearly with a multidisciplinary technical team.
- Willingness to work directly with experimental equipment in a laboratory and prototype-development environment.
Preferred QualificationsExperience in one or more of the following areas is especially valuable:
- Plasma-processing or chemical-vapor-deposition equipment.
- Vacuum systems and vacuum-compatible instrumentation.
- High-voltage or high-current power systems.
- PLC programming, industrial controls, or process automation.
- Embedded electronics, microcontrollers, or FPGA-based systems.
- Low-noise analog electronics and precision sensor readout.
- RF, microwave, magnetics, or electromagnetic-field systems.
- Radiation detectors, photodetectors, spectroscopy, or quantum-sensing instrumentation.
- Thermal-control systems, heaters, thermocouples, and closed-loop temperature control.
- EMI/EMC testing and aerospace electrical-interface requirements.
- NASA, Department of Defense, SBIR, or other government-funded R&D programs.
- Hardware development for spaceflight, high-reliability, or harsh-environment applications.
Direct experience with diamond is not required. A strong electrical-engineering foundation, sound judgment, and a willingness to learn unfamiliar technical systems are more important.The Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate enjoys solving difficult hardware problems and is not unsettled by equipment that has never existed before.
