Ascend Computer is a managed service provider based in Southwest Michigan. We have been in business since 1999 and support more than 50 business clients across the region, including dental, veterinary, medical, legal, accounting, and manufacturing firms. Our team of 8 handles everything from help desk to server builds to network security for clients who rely on us as their complete IT department.
This is a small company. You will not be one of hundreds of technicians in a queue. You will work directly with the owner and a small team, you will see the full picture of each client's environment, and you will have real responsibility for keeping their networks running.
The Role
We are hiring a Network Administrator to take ownership of client network infrastructure and server environments. The right candidate can work independently, follow a written procedure exactly when one exists, and figure out a sound approach when one does not. You will split time between remote work from our office and on-site visits to client locations.
What You Will Do
- Build, configure, and maintain Windows Server environments, including Active Directory domains built from scratch
- Deploy and manage Hyper-V hosts and virtual machines
- Configure and support firewalls, switches, and wireless access points (Zyxel Nebula experience is a plus)
- Set up and administer Microsoft 365 tenants, including Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and hybrid AD environments
- Manage backup systems and verify backup health across client sites
- Troubleshoot network, server, and connectivity issues remotely and on-site
- Support VoIP phone systems (RingCentral)
- Document work accurately in our ticketing system (Syncro) and follow through on tickets until they are actually resolved
- Follow HIPAA-appropriate practices when working in medical, dental, and veterinary environments
What We Are Looking For
Required:
- 2+ years of hands-on experience administering Windows Server and Active Directory in a business environment
- Experience with virtualization (Hyper-V preferred)
- Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs, and firewall configuration
- Experience administering Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online
- Ability to work independently, manage your own task list, and stay productive without constant direction
- Strong attention to written procedures and client-approved change processes
- Clear written and verbal communication with non-technical business owners and staff
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for client site visits
Preferred:
- MSP or multi-client IT support experience
- Zyxel Nebula, UniFi, or similar cloud-managed networking
- Azure AD Connect / hybrid identity
- MSP360 or similar backup platforms
- Dental, veterinary, or medical practice management software (Eaglesoft, Dentrix, SoftDent, IntraVet)
- Relevant certifications (CompTIA Network+, Security+, Microsoft, etc.)
