Sumter County is Currently Seeking an Assistant Shift Supervisor/Paramedic for Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Compensation: Starting at $24.50/hour, with compensation commensurate with experience.
Position Summary
The Assistant Shift Supervisor/Paramedic serves as both a frontline Paramedic and a member of the EMS leadership team. This position provides advanced life support to patients during emergency and non-emergency medical responses while assisting with the daily supervision of shift personnel and operations.
Working under limited supervision, the Assistant Shift Supervisor helps ensure emergency units are properly staffed, equipped, and prepared for service while maintaining high standards of patient care, documentation, equipment readiness, and employee performance. This position works a 24-hour shift schedule and may assume supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Shift Supervisor.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides advanced life support (ALS) treatment, emergency medical care, and safe patient transport in accordance with established medical protocols.
- Assists with supervising shift personnel by coordinating daily operations, assigning work, monitoring performance, and providing guidance and support to EMS staff.
- Assumes responsibility for shift operations during the absence of the Shift Supervisor, making operational and administrative decisions as needed.
- Ensures ambulances, medical equipment, medications, and supplies are properly maintained, inspected, inventoried, and ready for emergency response.
- Reviews patient care reports, billing documentation, narcotics records, and other required reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Responds to emergency incidents, mass casualty events, rescues, and other high-risk situations while maintaining scene safety and effective patient care.
- Coordinates with hospitals, dispatch, fire departments, law enforcement, and other emergency response agencies to ensure continuity of care.
- Assists with employee orientation, infection control compliance, performance evaluations, training, and professional development.
- Monitors the operational readiness of EMS substations and coordinates vehicle maintenance and equipment repairs.
- Participates in continuing education and maintains all required certifications.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree, technical degree, or vocational training in Emergency Medical Services or a closely related field preferred.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as a Paramedic or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Current National Registry or South Carolina Paramedic certification.
- Current CPR, ACLS, PALS, ITLS (or equivalent trauma certification), and other certifications required by South Carolina EMS regulations.
- Knowledge of inter-facility drug transport requirements.
- Valid South Carolina driver's license.
- Must meet all physical and medical requirements necessary to perform emergency medical duties.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of advanced emergency medical care, patient assessment, and pre-hospital treatment protocols.
- Knowledge of EMS operations, supervisory practices, infection control standards, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and support EMS personnel while maintaining high standards of patient care.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills in high-pressure, emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and County staff.
- Ability to accurately complete patient care reports, documentation, and operational records.
- Proficiency in operating ambulances, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, radios, stretchers, and other emergency medical equipment.
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities while maintaining professionalism and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform physically demanding emergency medical duties, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving patients weighing 200 pounds or more with assistance and appropriate equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, climb, crawl, and perform repetitive physical movements throughout extended shifts.
- Ability to safely operate emergency vehicles and specialized medical equipment.
- Ability to perform duties while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Environment
This position is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments under a variety of weather and emergency conditions. Employees routinely respond to medical emergencies, traumatic incidents, vehicle accidents, fires, and other hazardous situations. Work requires rotating 24-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-back as operational needs require.
