Job Description: Monday - Friday 8:30- 5:30 NO WEEKENDS

Position Summary

The Sterile Compounding Pharmacist is responsible for overseeing sterile compounding operations and ensuring all compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) are prepared accurately, safely, and in compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, USP standards, and company policies.

This position is responsible for formula development, prescription verification, quality assurance, staff training, workflow oversight, and regulatory compliance within the sterile compounding department. The Sterile Compounding Pharmacist works closely with the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC), Sterile Compounding Manager, pharmacy staff, and quality personnel to maintain high standards of patient care, operational efficiency, and product quality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance

Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local pharmacy laws, regulations, and standards related to sterile compounding.
Maintain working knowledge of USP <797>, USP <795>, and other applicable compounding standards and regulations.
Ensure compounded sterile preparations meet established standards for strength, sterility, quality, purity, and accuracy.
Verify that compounded preparations are properly identified, measured, diluted, mixed, sterilized, labeled, packaged, stored, and dispensed.
Review and verify prescription orders, formula worksheets, batch records, and final compounded preparations.
Perform in-process and final quality assurance checks prior to product release.
Participate in investigations, deviations, corrective actions (CAPAs), and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Assist during inspections conducted by regulatory and accrediting agencies, including but not limited to the FDA, NABP, DEA, State Boards of Pharmacy, and Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency (GDNA).

Compounding Operations

Compound sterile preparations in accordance with prescription requirements and company SOPs.
Develop, maintain, and update formulation worksheets and compounding documentation.
Troubleshoot formulation and compounding issues and implement corrective solutions when necessary.
Participate in sterile compounding activities and support workflow demands as needed.
Ensure compounding laboratory areas are maintained according to established cleaning, environmental monitoring, and maintenance procedures.
Coordinate compounding activities to support operational efficiency and timely prescription processing.

Leadership & Training

Provide oversight and direct supervision of sterile compounding personnel and processes.
Train pharmacists, technicians, and support staff on sterile compounding procedures, equipment, SOPs, and pharmacy software systems.
Ensure staff training, competency assessments, and documentation are completed according to company policies and regulatory requirements.
Support implementation of new procedures, technologies, and workflow improvements.
Maintain effective communication with pharmacy leadership, quality personnel, pharmacists, supervisors, and technicians.

Documentation & Administrative Responsibilities

Maintain accurate pharmacy records and documentation in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Ensure proper documentation of compounding activities, quality assurance activities, and training records.
Utilize pharmacy software systems, including PK Software and other operational systems, accurately and efficiently.
Assist with project management, process improvement initiatives, and operational tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an accredited pharmacy program required.

Licensure

Active and unrestricted pharmacist license in the state of practice required.
Ability to obtain additional state pharmacist licenses if requested.

Preferred Experience

Sterile compounding experience preferred.
Experience working in USP <797> sterile compounding environments preferred.
Experience supervising pharmacy personnel preferred.
Experience with PK Software or similar pharmacy systems preferred.
Non-sterile compounding experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong understanding of sterile compounding principles and regulatory requirements.
Strong mathematical and pharmaceutical calculation skills.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to prioritize tasks, solve problems, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
Ability to train and mentor pharmacy staff effectively.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and pharmacy software systems.
Technical writing skills for SOP development preferred.

Working Conditions

Majority of work performed in sterile compounding laboratory environments.
Exposure to chemicals and hazardous materials used in compounding preparations.
Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and sterile garbing.
Prolonged standing, walking, bending, reaching, and computer use required.
Ability to lift and move supplies and equipment as necessary.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
Ability to wear required sterile compounding PPE for prolonged periods.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently.
Ability to perform repetitive hand movements and operate compounding equipment safely.

Additional Expectations

Maintain pharmacist license in good standing at all times.
Complete all required continuing education requirements, including compounding-related education.
Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all patient and business interactions.
