Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Senior Medical Officer provides medical oversight and scientific support for clinical research programs by reviewing clinical trial protocols, monitoring participant safety, assessing adverse events, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical standards. This role collaborates with internal teams, FDA, sponsors, and academic partners to support the design, implementation, and oversight of DMID-sponsored clinical trials.

Key Responsibilities

Review clinical trial protocols and provide safety and operational recommendations.
Assess Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) and SUSAR notifications.
Perform periodic medical data reviews, including laboratory values, adverse events, coding documentation, listings, and figures.
Evaluate clinical trial design and safety while supporting communications with the FDA, sponsors, and academic partners.
Provide medical and scientific expertise to cross-functional project teams.
Serve as a safety expert on safety committees and review safety reports.
Participate in OCRA meetings, training sessions, and safety education initiatives.
Develop policies and guidelines related to clinical trial safety.
Provide guidance on clinical trial management and oversight.
Identify process gaps, recommend improvements, and support issue resolution.

Required Qualifications

Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from an accredited university.
Minimum 10 years in clinical research or medical oversight.
Strong knowledge of FDA regulations, IRB processes, GCP, and clinical trial safety.
Experience reviewing clinical trial protocols and safety data.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and medical writing skills.

Education

Master's degree or higher.
Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from an accredited university.

Certifications & Licensure

Active physician license (preferred, if applicable).
Medical degree from an accredited university.
