Overview
The District 2 Medical Examiner located in Tallahassee, FL and provides medico-legal death investigations pursuant to Florida State Statute Chapter 406. We are currently seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Forensic Autopsy Technician. The District 2 Medical Examiner Office serves 10 counties in and around Tallahassee, FL.

The Technician will assist the Medical Examiner and Associates in the performance of autopsies. The candidate will complete moderately complex duties while assisting in the performance of autopsies and effective daily operations of the morgue.
This is technical work consisting of varied autopsy procedures and associated duties in the cleaning of morgue equipment and examination areas. The work requires knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in the morgue.
Work is performed primarily in the morgue area and includes exposure to chemicals and bio-hazardous materials. Operation of autopsy equipment such as electrical saws, measuring devices, digital scales, mechanical lift, X-Ray machine, surgical instruments and personal computer to input data is part of the daily routine. The physical demands of the work include standing for extended periods of time, bending, and moderate physical activity such as lifting and moving cadavers and/or objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
Sample of Responsibilities
- Preparation and processing of decedents, specimens of human organs, and autopsy room to assist pathologist in postmortem examinations.
- Assists pathologists in the performance of autopsies by undressing, cleaning, weighing organs, and measuring decedents and separate organs; opening cavities; assisting in the removal of organs and toxicology specimens.
- Intake of new decedents in morgue and assures their proper storage, identification and release to authorized persons.
- Inventories effects and other articles, bags evidence and valuables, and documents information while maintaining chain of custody.
- Maintains proper order and thorough cleanliness and disinfection of responsible areas.
- Performs other related work as required.
Sample of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of standard routines and basic instruments used in a morgue.
- Knowledge of hazardous material handling procedures.
- Knowledge of safety procedures, occupational hazards, personal protective equipment, blood borne pathogens and universal precautions.
- Ability to understand and/or follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform assigned tasks according to standard autopsy procedures.
- Ability and willingness to use a personal computer, digital camera, digital X-ray equipment, electric saw, and surgical instruments.
Experience and Education
A minimum of an associate’s degree in biological or physical science, forensic science, criminal justice, or closely related field is desired (a bachelor’s degree is preferred). The ideal candidate will have a background in forensic science, and experience or performing autopsy technician assistant duties; or equivalent related education and experience sufficient to competently perform essential duties of the job as described above.
Two (2) year of experience in autopsy room, mortuary science, or emergency medicine (basic or higher) is preferred.
All employees of the District 2 Medical Examiner must successfully pass a background check, possess a valid driver license with clean driving record, and complete pre-employment drug screening.
