Position Summary
The Optical Technician / Optician is responsible for delivering an outstanding optical experience from frame styling to final dispensing. This role combines technical skill, product knowledge, and customer service to help patients understand their options, feel confident in their purchase, and leave seeing clearly.
This team member connects prescriptions to real-life solutions by recommending lenses, frames, and enhancements based on each patient’s lifestyle, visual needs, and insurance benefits. They also ensure optical orders are accurate, organized, and delivered on time.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Experience & Optical Sales
- Interpret prescriptions written by the doctors
- Assist patients in selecting frames based on face shape, style, color, and comfort
- Advise patients on frame materials, weights, and durability
- Recommend lenses, coatings, and enhancements based on lifestyle needs(progressives, AR, Transitions, blue light filtering, polarized, high-index, etc.)
- Clearly explain pricing, insurance benefits, and out-of-pocket costs
- Sell glasses, prescription sunglasses, contact lenses, and optical accessories
- Build relationships that encourage repeat visits and referrals
Measurements, Fitting & Dispensing
- Accurately take optical measurements including PD, seg heights, vertex distance, pantoscopic tilt, and frame sizing
- Use manual or automated lensometers to verify prescriptions
- Check in eyewear and inspect lenses for accuracy, defects, and correct specifications
- Dispense completed eyewear ensuring proper fit, comfort, and visual clarity
- Adjust frames using optical tools and perform minor repairs
Order Processing & Lab Coordination
- Enter eyewear orders accurately into the system
- Prepare orders for glasses and contact lenses, verifying prescriptions, lens thickness, and specifications
- Create detailed lab work orders
- Track orders, remakes, and delays, keeping patients informed
- Document remake reasons and patient concerns
Financial & Administrative Support
- Review and reconcile optical sales daily
- Assist with collecting patient balances at pickup
- Answer questions related to materials benefits and warranties
- Perform general clerical duties including phone reception and other office tasks
Showroom & Team Support
- Maintain a clean, organized, and inviting optical showroom
- Sanitize frames and surfaces throughout the day
- Assist with restocking the frames walks
- Maintain strict confidentiality and follow all HIPAA guidelines
Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of eye care or optical experience required
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable discussing pricing, insurance, and product upgrades
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Computer proficiency
- Excellent multitasking ability in a fast-paced environment
- Dependable, professional, and team-oriented
Certifications (Preferred but Not Required): ABO and/or NCLE
Physical Requirements
- Regular standing, walking, and sitting
- Frequent bending and reaching
- Ability to lift up to 10 lbs frequently and up to 30 lbs occasionally
- Strong manual dexterity and visual accuracy required for detailed optical work
