About Avam
Avam is an applied and material sciences company designing products, platforms, and technologies across life sciences and advanced chemistry. Through Avam Sciences and Avam Chem, we bring scientific rigor and design discipline together to solve complex problems across laboratories, industry, and everyday life.
“We Design Science” is more than a statement of what we do. It is the standard applied to how Avam looks, sounds, and communicates.
The Role
At Avam, precision is visual.
The Creative Designer builds Avam’s visual identity into everything the company makes—the counterpart to the Brand Writer in carrying “We Design Science” from principle to artifact.
Working within the Group-level Creative & Brand team, this role designs across Avam Group, Avam Sciences, and Avam Chem. The work spans packaging systems, digital experiences and web design, catalogs and sales collateral, product and platform identities, presentations, environmental applications, and other customer-facing materials.
This is both a strategic and production-level design role. You may begin by determining how an entire product family should present itself and finish by preparing the final dieline, resolving a typography issue, reviewing a print proof, or refining a responsive layout. The concept and the execution receive the same attention.
Avam’s visual system is monochrome and typographically disciplined. There is nowhere to hide. Hierarchy, proportion, spacing, typography, and restraint must do the work that color and ornament do elsewhere.
This is a hands-on craft role for a designer who believes precision is an aesthetic.
What You’ll Do
- Build and continuously refine Avam’s visual identity across Avam Group, Avam Sciences, and Avam Chem.
- Translate the company’s brand principles into complete, scalable systems rather than isolated design assets.
- Design packaging architectures that can extend across product families, formats, sizes, and regulatory requirements.
- Create production-ready labels, cartons, inserts, and other packaging materials using accurate dielines, specifications, and prepress standards.
- Design responsive websites, digital surfaces, landing pages, product experiences, and reusable interface components in collaboration with web and development teams.
- Develop visual identities for products, platforms, programs, technologies, and capabilities while maintaining a clear relationship to the broader Avam system.
- Design catalogs, brochures, technical literature, sales collateral, presentations, templates, environmental graphics, signage, and event materials.
- Partner with the Brand Writer from the beginning of each project so that form and language are composed together.
- Work with scientists, product specialists, commercial teams, and other subject-matter experts to organize complex information into clear visual hierarchies.
- Maintain standards for typography, grids, spacing, imagery, layout, iconography, and visual consistency.
- Build and manage design templates, component libraries, packaging frameworks, specifications, and production resources that allow the system to scale.
- Prepare, preflight, and release production-ready files for digital and physical applications.
- Review proofs, prototypes, samples, and finished materials to ensure the final result matches the design intent.
- Coordinate with printers, packaging suppliers, fabricators, developers, and other production partners when necessary.
- Serve as the final visual quality filter for customer-facing materials before release.
Packaging and Technical Design
Avam’s products often carry scientific, technical, quality, and regulatory information. The Creative Designer is responsible for presenting that information with clarity, hierarchy, and precision, not for independently changing its substance.
Technical content owners and the appropriate Quality, Regulatory, and Legal stakeholders remain responsible for claims, required language, specifications, and approvals. The Creative Designer ensures that approved content is translated into an effective, accurate, and production ready visual system.
The work must remain strong after real world constraints are introduced. A design is not finished when the mockup looks convincing. It is finished when the file survives production.
What You Bring
- A portfolio demonstrating strength in identity systems, packaging, typography, digital design, editorial design, or brand applications.
- A sophisticated understanding of typography, hierarchy, grids, proportion, spacing, and composition.
- Experience designing within a restrained visual system where craft and judgment carry the work.
- The ability to think at the system level while remaining exacting about production details.
- Strong packaging and print-production knowledge, including dielines, bleeds, safe areas, substrates, print methods, finishes, color management, prepress, and proof review.
- Experience designing responsive web experiences and reusable digital components.
- Advanced proficiency with professional design tools, including Adobe Creative Cloud.
- The ability to organize complex scientific or technical information without making it feel dense, decorative, or generic.
- Experience working closely with writers and an understanding of how language and form influence one another.
- The judgment to know when a problem requires a new concept, a stronger system, or simply a more disciplined execution.
- Strong file-management, version-control, and production-handoff habits.
- The ability to move comfortably between concept development, stakeholder collaboration, detailed production, and final quality control.
- Openness to direct critique and the ability to explain design decisions clearly and objectively.
Experience designing for science, life sciences, chemistry, healthcare, industrial products, consumer packaging, or another technically complex field is preferred. Formal design education is welcome, but the quality of the portfolio, thinking, and execution carries the most weight.
What Success Looks Like
- Avam’s work is recognizable even when the logo is absent.
- Avam Sciences and Avam Chem retain the appropriate character for their respective audiences while remaining part of one disciplined visual system.
- Product and platform identities feel distinct without fragmenting the master brand.
- Packaging is clear, scalable, technically accurate, and ready for reliable production.
- Complex information becomes easier to understand without appearing simplified or generic.
- Writing and design are developed together rather than assembled at the end of a project.
- Digital experiences feel as deliberate as physical materials.
- Design files, templates, and production standards are organized well enough to support a growing portfolio.
- What appears on screen survives print, fabrication, implementation, and use.
Portfolio
Please include a focused portfolio of relevant work. We are particularly interested in examples involving:
- Brand or identity systems
- Packaging systems taken through production
- Typography-led or deliberately restrained design
- Responsive web or digital product design
- Product, platform, or sub-brand identity
- Editorial design, catalogs, or information-dense collateral
- Work developed in close partnership with a writer
- Environmental, signage, or physical brand applications
For each example, briefly describe the objective, constraints, your specific contribution, and how the work was ultimately produced or implemented. Process materials, production details, and examples showing how a system scales are encouraged. Redacted work is welcome when necessary to protect confidential information.
The Standard
The right designer is rigorous without becoming rigid. You understand that restraint is not the absence of design; it is the result of disciplined decisions.
You can move from the organizing idea behind a product platform to the spacing of a label, the behavior of a digital component, or the tolerances of a dieline without treating any part of the process as secondary. You care about what something means, how it looks, how it works, and how it is made.
At Avam, design is not applied after the science is complete. It is part of how the science is understood.
