Full Job Description

General Purpose of Position:
The ESE Specialist supports the implementation of high-quality special education services by providing leadership in exceptional student education, IEP implementation, compliance, data analysis, and evidence-based practices. Working collaboratively with teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families, the ESE Specialist ensures the provision of free and appropriate public education (FAPE) and to improve the outcomes of students with disabilities.

The ESE Specialist plays a key role in supporting teachers with the development and implementation of individualized educational programs (IEPs), progress monitoring, accommodations, modifications, and specially designed instruction (SDI). The position also promotes the integration of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), functional communication, sensory supports, assistive technology, and positive behavior interventions into daily instruction, ensuring students have access to meaningful learning opportunities while developing independence and functional life skills. As an instructional leader, the ESE Specialist helps foster consistency in special education practices across classrooms while supporting individualized programming that reflects each student's strengths, needs, and post-secondary goals.

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Principal, the ESE Specialist's key responsibilities include (but not limited to):

1. IEP and Compliance:
a. Oversee and monitor all aspects of the IEP process (Annual Reviews, Reevaluations, Transfers, etc.) for all students enrolled at FACE to ensure compliance within Florida State and Federal IDEA guidelines.
b. Ensure all IEP and related documentation are completed accurately and within Florida state and federal IDEA guidelines.
c. LEA for all annual, eligibility, reevaluation, amendments, transition, and manifestation determinations meetings.
d. Conduct regular audits of IEPs, student files, and compliance documentation to identify concerns before compliance deadlines.
e. Review Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFPs) for accuracy and alignment with student needs.
f. Support teachers in writing high-quality, measurable IEP goals that address each student's individual educational needs.
g. Collaborate with FACE administration and district personnel regarding compliance and state reporting requirements.

2. Instructional Support:
a. Collaborate with teachers and related service providers to ensure IEP services are implemented with consistency through documentation of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) Logs.
b. Support onboarding new teachers for policies, procedures, and protocols related to ESE/IEP.
c. Assist in determining appropriate accommodations, modifications, supplementary aids, and services.
d. Mentor teachers on special education procedures and documentation requirements.

3. Student Support:
a. Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and ensure progress reports are completed on schedule.
b. Support planning for Extended School Year (ESY) services based on student data.
c. Assist with transition planning, vocational programming, and post-secondary readiness for secondary students.
d. Assist with educational programming decisions.

4. All other duties as assigned by the FACE Principal/Assistant Principal.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree or higher in Education, Special Education, or other related fields is required. Master's degree is preferred.
Must have professional teaching certification or credential for the subject area of Exceptional Student Education in accordance with FL 1002.33(12), Florida Statutes. Autism Spectrum Disorder Endorsement preferred.
Thorough knowledge of IDEA, Florida ESE procedures, and IEP development and experience processing of IEP documentation is required.
Experience working with individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities and/or challenging behaviors is preferred.
Training or experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is preferred.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or employees of an organization.

Mathematical and Computer Skills: Ability to perform basic math functions. Proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint are required.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Additionally, the employee is occasionally required to run, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed to support the safety and behavioral needs of our students. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move a maximum of 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, and peripheral vision, color and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Depending on the school and student population served, the employee may occasionally be required to physically restrain clients, using authorized restraint procedures as a last resort for protection of students and staff.

Work Environment: The work environment for this position is a school setting. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee may be exposed to students who may ask inappropriate personal questions, display socially unacceptable personal behaviors, use profanity and sexually explicit phrases, make insulting remarks or threats regarding appearance, age, sex, or race, and exhibit defiance, dishonesty, and assaultive or self-destructive behaviors. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may be subject to occasional travel as required by facility needs. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
