Full Job Description

Summary:
The Assistant Pastry Chef supports the Head Pastry Chef in executing tasks within the Pastry Kitchen, which specializes in European-style pastries and desserts. This kitchen services multiple Bluff View Art District entities, including a traditional Italian restaurant, an executive conference and banquet facility, a bed-and-breakfast-style inn, a European-style coffee house, and select small wholesale accounts.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

· Prepares a variety of breakfast pastries and desserts according to both traditional and contemporary recipes

· Ensures all food is prepared safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established specifications or guest requests

· Adheres strictly to all relevant health, safety, and sanitation regulations and standards

· Contributes to menu development by creating new pastries and desserts based on current food trends, ingredient costs, guest preferences, and seasonal availability

· Assists with inventory management, including stocking, ordering, and purchasing ingredients to ensure freshness and availability while minimizing waste and spoilage

· Maintains and routinely inspects kitchen tools and equipment, recommending maintenance or replacement as necessary

· Assists in maintaining the kitchen’s budget by managing ingredients, portioning, and minimizing waste

· Collaborates to design innovative, high-quality, and visually appealing desserts and pastries

· Cleans and sanitizes all baking tools, utensils, mixing equipment, and machinery after use; maintains cleanliness of work surfaces and the overall pastry kitchen to ensure food safety compliance

· Works early morning day shifts starting no later than 5:45 AM, with required availability on weekends and some holidays

· Performs other duties as assigned in support of Bluff View Art District operations

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, an applicant must be able to perform each essential duty effectively. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the position. · Education and/or Experience

o Required

Minimum of two (2) years of professional work experience in pastries, desserts or baking

Knowledge of kitchen and food preparation

Complete knowledge of Fire and Safety Procedures, health code, and agricultural department rules and regulations

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong time management

Motivated, self-driven, and detail oriented

Adheres to high-quality standards

o Preferred

Associate degree (or higher) in culinary arts

· Language Skills

o Professional and accurate verbal and written communication

· Mathematical Skills

o Understanding of baking measurements and the ability to use simple math equations while using recipes

· Reasoning Ability

o Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills

· Certificates, Licenses, or Certifications

o Preferred

Prefer Certified Fundamentals Pastry Cook and/or Certified Working Pastry Chef

Physical Demands:

· Ability to stand for long periods of time

· Ability to walk in the restaurant and short distances to entities, as well as walk up and down stairs in multi-story buildings

· Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently

· Ability to work in a kitchen environment with potential exposure to extreme heat or cold

Work Environment:

· 1.5 city blocks of building on the property, which include a restaurant, coffee house, meeting venue, art gallery, bed-and-breakfast, bakery, coffee roaster, and gardens

· Multi-level buildings with stairs

Compensation & Benefits:

· Starting pay rate of $18.00/hour

· Medical, dental, vision for full-time employees with employer paying a minimum of 50% of premium, indexed annually based on ACA affordability guidelines

· Discounts on food as outlined by Bluff View Art District discount protocol

· Flexible schedule as determined by Director of Operations and in accordance with kitchen needs

· Recognized holidays of Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, though the Inn and Bakery are open

Pay: $18.00 per hour
