Full Job Description

Overview

Interstate Packaging is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Purchasing Agent to join our team. Reporting directly to the Purchasing Manager, this position serves as a critical link between our suppliers and internal departments to ensure materials are purchased accurately, cost-effectively, and on time.

The ideal candidate has manufacturing purchasing experience, exceptional mathematical and analytical skills, and the ability to make data-driven purchasing decisions. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, excellent negotiation skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What You'll Do

Analyze supplier quotations, pricing proposals, and cost structures to ensure competitive and accurate pricing.
Negotiate pricing, volume discounts, payment terms, and delivery schedules with suppliers.
Evaluate supplier performance based on quality, cost, delivery, and service.
Forecast inventory requirements using production schedules, usage trends, and inventory data.
Create and maintain accurate purchase orders with detailed material specifications and pricing.
Audit vendor invoices against purchase orders and receiving records for accuracy.
Maintain vendor master data, including pricing, lead times, minimum order quantities, and supplier information.
Perform variance analysis comparing actual purchasing costs to budgeted spend.
Review production work orders to verify material allocations and inventory valuation.
Monitor inventory turnover, reorder points, and usage trends to reduce excess inventory and material shortages.
Track and report procurement KPIs, including supplier performance, cost savings, and purchasing accuracy.
Utilize the Axapta ERP system to manage item setups, material specifications, supplier codes, and purchasing data.
Collaborate with Production and Quality teams to resolve material quality issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Finance, Mathematics, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of 2 years of purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment required.
Strong analytical and mathematical abilities with exceptional numerical accuracy.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and formulas.
Experience working with ERP systems (Axapta experience preferred).
Proven ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make informed purchasing decisions.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

Strong understanding of purchasing principles, inventory management, and cost analysis.
Advanced mathematical skills, including unit conversions, yield calculations, pricing analysis, and cost comparisons.
Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to interpret technical product specifications and supplier documentation.
Exceptional attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy.
Strong communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.
High level of integrity, accountability, and professionalism.
