Full Job Description

Organizational Overview:

The Bergen County Division of Family Guidance provides clinical, residential, educational, correctional, case management, and monitoring services to at-risk children, adolescents, and families, particularly those who are otherwise unable to receive needed services. Through its more than 27 programs, it is Bergen County’s resource for youth and families in need.

Job Description:
This employment opportunity is to serve as a Youth Group Worker. Under direction, supervises and conducts group and individual activities designed to benefit juveniles; does related work as required. The position has a primary assignment in one of two programs of the Division:

Bergen’s Place (Bergen County Youth Complex in Teterboro, NJ).

Bergen’s Place is a state licensed residential crisis and homeless shelter for youth aged 11-to-17. The shelter provides 24-hour temporary housing for youth experiencing homelessness, housing instability, crisis within their homes, or those at-risk for homelessness. Goals of the shelter program are to assist youth in building permanent connections with caring adults and reunite them with their families.

Visions (Conklin Building in Hackensack, NJ).

Visions is a transitional residential program for those aged 16 ½-to-22. The program prepares residents for self-reliance through development of life skills and assists them in educational pursuits, finding employment, and securing permanent housing.

A Youth Group Worker will be assigned to one primary program but may provide services in alternate locations as needed.

Job Responsibilities:

Organizes, supervises and conducts various activities to youth residing in the shelter or Vision’s program.
Assist in screening, evaluation and orientation of homeless youth.
Monitors and records individual and group actions and behavior during planned activities.
Prepares reports concerned with individual and group behavior.
Respond to crisis phone calls, walk-in youth seeking emergency shelter, and/or intake procedures as required.
Organizes, supervises, and participates in recreational and social activities for groups and individuals.
Ensure safe and comfortable environment for residents and employees.
Assist juveniles in developing improved sense of responsibility towards themselves and society.
Maintains essential records and files.

Schedule:

Full time (40 hours/week).
Shift work required. Applicants must be able and willing to work evenings and weekends.
Occasional overtime as needed.

Education Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, or related fields.

Other Requirements:

Experience working with at-risk youth, preferably in a group/residential setting is preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams, Word, Outlook and Excel programs.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey to perform essential duties of the position.
