Wage: $19.30-$25.39 (Legacy Class C)*
- The salary reflected is based on the current salary schedule. Compensation is subject to change upon ratification and implementation of the 2026-29 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Any negotiated salary adjustments, including retroactive adjustments if applicable, will be applied in accordance with the terms of the ratified agreement.
JOB SUMMARY
The Instructional Assistant supports student learning, development, and safety by assisting teachers in the delivery of instruction, classroom routines, and individualized support. This position works with children in whole-group, small-group, and one-on-one settings to reinforce early academic skills, promote social–emotional growth, and assist with daily living needs. The Instructional Assistant helps prepare and organize classroom materials, supports behavior and classroom management, supervises students during transitions and play, and provides personal-care assistance such as toileting or diapering when required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position may perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.

Prepare teaching materials and reports for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of student progress.
- Assist in the presentation of instructional materials and academic instruction to individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher.
- Assists with collecting and maintaining accurate documentation as directed by the teacher.

Maintains a safe and nurturing learning environment.
- Provides child-care support during parent classes and workshops and assists with family-focused programming.

Collaborates successfully with teachers and other program staff to support student growth.

Delivers targeted academic and behavioral support to assigned students, implementing individualized strategies and interventions to help them meet established learning goals and demonstrate measurable growth.

Supports the implementation of individualized accommodations and modifications as directed for students qualified for special education.

When assigned, may accompany students, including students with disabilities, on school transportation to support safety, supervision, and student needs during transit.

Communicate with students in English and/or Spanish to facilitate instructional processes; provide interpretation during telephone calls with limited or non-English speaking parents; translate or write notes, letters and other materials.
- Observe and provide appropriate behavior support following department policies to provide a clean, safe and optimal learning environment.

Assists with routine classroom clean-up and organization between activities to maintain a safe, sanitary, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for students. This may include wiping tables and learning surfaces, organizing instructional materials, assisting children with age-appropriate clean-up, and resetting classroom spaces to support smooth transitions between instructional activities.

Perform duties relating to a student’s physical needs.
- Assists staff with record keeping, copying, filing, data entry and taking attendance.

Assists the teacher in developing educational materials (copying, typing, laminating, etc.).

Assists the teacher in the set-up and maintenance of the classroom, materials and supplies.

Assists the teacher in scheduling appropriate meetings and completion of paperwork.

Assists the teacher, when directed, in communicating with parents/guardians.

Participates effectively at regular team meetings with teachers and other support staff using appropriate social skills.

Keeps appropriate confidentiality as required by law regarding student and staff information.

Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to the supervisor.

Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, administrators, and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.

Communicates clearly with coworkers and other staff.

Provide professional and responsive support to students, staff and families.

Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and inquiries.
- Represent the ESD and school positively and professionally in all interactions.

- Attends work daily as assigned and is punctual.

Adheres to the daily schedule as assigned by the supervisor.
MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.

Supports family engagement events, including assisting with set-up/tear-down, translation/interpretation (if bilingual), and child supervision during parent meetings.

Assists other staff as necessary including answering telephones, routing information to appropriate staff and operating general office machinery including photocopy machine, computer and fax machine.

Performs minor first aid in compliance with ESD policy and completes required paperwork in a timely fashion.

Assists on school field trips.

Files documents and records according to predetermined classifications, maintaining alphabetical index, and cross references files.

Attends in-service training as required.

Attends staff meetings.

Completes online training courses as required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
All ESD employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or one to two years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential

Must meet current Federal Department of Education requirements.

Prior successful experience working in a school setting or with children strongly preferred.

Demonstrated ability to successfully work with students.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to comprehend, interpret, and explain applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.

Ability to address problems involving multiple variables in a variety of situations.

Ability to communicate fluently in English and Spanish, both orally and in writing, is preferred.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one and small-group settings with students and school staff.

General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use standard school software, internet applications, email, spreadsheets, accounting programs, and word processing software.

Ability to proficiently use required software programs.

Ability to create graphs and charts using spreadsheet software.

Ability to type accurately and proficiently.

Ability to exercise good judgment and work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Certificates as required by the ESD, including meeting current Federal Department of Education certification requirements.

Valid Oregon Driver’s License.

Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance and successful completion of the ESD background screening process.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is in a school that combines standard office setting including standard office equipment (fax, copier, phone, computer, 10-key, etc.) with the standard school setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate and occasionally high depending upon student population and activities. May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
