GENERAL:

POSITION SUMMARY
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures to assist physicians in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patient conditions. This position operates nuclear imaging equipment, administers radiopharmaceuticals safely, ensures high-quality diagnostic images, maintains patient safety and comfort, and adheres to radiation safety and regulatory standards. The technologist is responsible for accurate documentation, effective communication, and compliance with departmental protocols and quality assurance requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for:
- Performing nuclear medicine imaging procedures using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Preparing, handling, and administering radiopharmaceuticals safely according to established protocols.
- Utilizing hospital systems including HIS, RIS, and PACS for patient and imaging management.
- Verifying physician orders and confirming the correct procedure prior to imaging.
- Explaining nuclear medicine procedures to patients and answering questions to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Maintaining patient privacy, dignity, and modesty at all times.
- Adhering strictly to patient safety, radiation protection, and infection control standards.
- Accurately transcribing physician orders and scheduling appointments.
- Ensuring accurate transmission of imaging results, reports, and communications.
- Maintaining thorough documentation and reporting of imaging procedures and radiopharmaceutical usage.
- Completing required maintenance and quality control documentation for nuclear medicine equipment.
Additional duties may be assigned to support departmental operations, leadership, and quality improvement initiatives.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist shall:
- Graduate from an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program or equivalent, as determined by the Director.
- Be registered or registry-eligible with one or more of the following:
- Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (CNMT)
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) (if applicable)
- Maintain a current Wyoming Diagnostic Imaging License (if required).
- Demonstrate effective communication skills when interacting with patients and the public.
- Demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Maintain proficiency in computer applications including:
- Word processing
- Spreadsheets
- Database systems
- Presentation software
- Project documentation
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret appropriate journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write policies and procedures that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to modify care based on the developmental / functional age of the patient as well as that of the patient's ethnic background.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Required certifications may include:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Current Wyoming Diagnostic Imaging License
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (CNMT)
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to interact with patients, families, visitors and co-workers. Ability to interact assertively and tactfully when dealing with conflict and in group solving activities. Ability to demonstrate a professional, open minded approach in identifying problems and resolving problems/conflicts.
AGE SPECIFIC:
Must be able to provide care according to the developmental level and or chronological patient served. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying the needs and abilities of each patient, and demonstrating an understanding of how a patient’s chronological and developmental age influences his/her need for adaptations related to his/her abilities. Also, an understanding of how a patient’s age impacts his/her ability to deal with and adapt to the care needed/provided is required. General census of neonatal to geriatric patients.

While filling this position, the employee must regularly lift and or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance, vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. This position also requires reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, and hearing, stooping, bending, crouching, and working with equipment.
