Full Job Description

Overview:

The Lead Float Nurse will directly supervise the float nurses and manage their scheduling to ensure proper staffing coverage across multiple facilities. In addition to their supervisory role, the Lead Float Nurse will temporarily cover the Director of Nursing (DON) positions until they are filled and provide PTO coverage for DONs within the region. The Lead Float Nurse will also attend Director of Clinical Education’s DON orientation to learn both the float nurse and DON responsibilities. This position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervision and Coordination:

· Supervise, support, and provide guidance to the float nurse team, ensuring effective coverage and staffing across facilities.

· Manage float nurse scheduling, ensuring shifts are appropriately filled to meet the needs of the community.

· Assist with filling in for Director of Nursing (DON) roles when vacancies occur, as well as providing PTO coverage for DONs within the region.

· Attend Director of Clinical Education’s DON orientation to learn about both the float nurse and DON roles, ensuring a smooth transition when covering DON responsibilities.

· Serve as the point of contact for float nurses, providing ongoing support, troubleshooting staffing issues, and ensuring quality care.

Clinical Leadership:

· Act as a leader for the float nurse team by ensuring adherence to clinical protocols, policies, and best practices.

· Support float nurses in assessing and managing resident care, providing guidance and mentorship as needed.

· Collaborate with the nursing and administrative teams to maintain consistent communication and seamless care delivery across all facilities.

· Conduct regular audits of clinical documentation and care practices, ensuring compliance with healthcare standards.

· Provide leadership in emergency situations, ensuring proper protocols are followed and staff is supported.

Medication and Clinical Oversight:

· Oversee medication administration for residents, ensuring accurate documentation and timely delivery of prescribed medications.

· Assist with the management of narcotics, including accurate counting, documentation, and appropriate disposal in accordance with legal and organizational policies.

· Support the clinical team in conducting routine assessments, monitoring resident care, and documenting significant changes in health status.

· Ensure float nurses are accurately documenting medication administration records (MARs) and addressing medication refusals or errors appropriately.

Staff Management and Scheduling:

· Manage and coordinate the float nurse scheduling, ensuring adequate staffing levels to meet the needs of the community.

· Fill callouts and assist with staffing adjustments as needed to ensure optimal coverage.

· Assist in the orientation and training of new float nurses to ensure they are prepared to meet the needs of the community.

Emergency and On-Call Support:

· Be available to respond to clinical concerns and emergency situations in the absence of the DON.

· Provide on-call leadership support, addressing clinical issues and providing direction as necessary.

Qualifications:

· Education:

o Graduate of a state-accredited nursing school or course.

o Registered Nurse (RN) with valid state licensure.

o CPR certification required.

· Experience:

o Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role.

o Prior experience working in long-term care or similar healthcare settings preferred.

· Skills and Knowledge:

o Strong clinical knowledge and the ability to lead and guide nursing staff.

o Excellent organizational and time-management skills to oversee float nurse scheduling and staffing needs.

o Ability to handle multiple priorities and adapt to changing clinical environments.

o Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate effectively with staff and leadership.

o Familiarity with clinical documentation systems and MARs, with the ability to audit and ensure compliance.

Physical Requirements:

· Ability to lift up to [50] pounds.

· Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods.

· Ability to perform tasks that require dexterity, such as administering medications or using medical equipment.

Work Environment:

· Fast-paced healthcare environment with travel between facilities as required.

· Must be flexible to fill in for DON responsibilities as needed and provide on-call leadership
