General Purpose:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the operation, maintenance, and repair of municipal water and wastewater systems. This position supports the safe and reliable delivery of drinking water and the proper collection, treatment, and disposal of wastewater. Responsibilities include work in water production, water distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment systems.
This is a temporary-to-hire position, with the opportunity for permanent employment based on performance, certification attainment, and organizational needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
-High School Diploma or GED
-Valid Texas Driver’s License (minimum Class C)
-Ability to obtain a Class D Water Operator License and Class D Wastewater Operator License within six (6) months of hire.
-Ability to obtain a Class C Water Operator License and Class C Wastewater Operator License within twenty (24) months of hire.
Typical Duties:
The following duties are representative and not intended to be all-inclusive:
Water Production System
- Operate groundwater wells, pumps, motors, and treatment equipment
- Operate Cooling towers
- Monitor system pressures, flows, and tank levels
- Perform routine inspections and operational adjustments
- Collect water samples for compliance and process control
- Maintain disinfection systems and chemical feed equipment
Water Distribution System
- Repair water main breaks, leaks, valves, and hydrants
- Perform line flushing and assist with water quality maintenance
- Locate underground utilities and assist in system mapping
- Install and maintain service connections and meters
- Support water loss control and leak detection efforts
Wastewater Collection System
- Clean and maintain sewer lines using jetting and mechanical equipment
- Respond to sewer backups and overflows
- Inspect manholes and pipelines
- Perform inflow and infiltration (I&I) reduction activities
- Assist with lift station inspections and minor repairs
Wastewater Treatment System
- Operate treatment units including pumps, aeration systems, clarifiers, and disinfection systems
- Monitor plant performance and adjust process controls as needed
- Collect and analyze wastewater samples
- Perform sludge handling and disposal activities
- Maintain compliance with regulatory discharge limits
General Responsibilities
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and facilities
- Maintain accurate operational logs, reports, and records
- Follow all safety procedures and regulations
- Respond to emergency calls, including after-hours as required
- Assist with construction, installation, and rehabilitation projects
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of or expected to learn:
- Basic principles of water and wastewater system operations
- Equipment, tools, and materials used in utility maintenance
- Safety practices and procedures related to public works operations
- Basic math related to measurements, flows, and chemical dosing
- Regulatory requirements related to water quality and wastewater compliance
Skills in or expected to learn:
- Operating hand tools, power tools, and light to medium equipment
- Performing mechanical and basic electrical troubleshooting
- Reading meters, gauges, and system instrumentation
- Maintaining accurate records and logs
- Communicating effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public

- Learn and apply water and wastewater operational procedures
- Obtain required certifications within the specified timeframe
- Work independently and as part of a team
- Perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions

Other Job Characteristics:
· Employment Type: Temporary-to-Hire
· Work Environment: Outdoor fieldwork and indoor plant environments, including exposure to weather extremes, chemicals, wastewater, and mechanical hazards
· Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and climbing
- Ability to enter confined spaces (with proper training)
· Work Schedule:
- Standard work hours with on-call, overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

Pay: $18.00 - $30.00 per hour
