Full Job Description

Position Summary

The System Administrator is part of a team which is responsible for the College campus server infrastructures. The System Administrator responsibilities include ensuring the servers, peripherals, and software are on-line and available to the user as required; working with vendors to research emerging technologies and diagnose and resolve server problems; automating server tasks; utilizing multiple tools to monitor the servers to ensure optimum performance and to assist in troubleshooting issues; working with faculty, staff, and students in the integration, maintenance, and problem resolution of servers; maintaining documentation and database information of VMware and associated servers; and assisting in the preparation and evaluation of bid specifications for server hardware and software, as directed by the Manager of IT Infrastructure. The System Administrator is responsible for the installation, management and support of applications, servers, systems, integrations, and monitoring of various enterprise level systems including server, and VMware related systems. Responsibilities include application systems, technical administration, including support of systems hardware and software management.

Essential Job Functions

Install, maintain and upgrade server hardware.
Install all server operating systems on server hardware, to include Microsoft Server, Linux, and VMware.
Install, maintain and upgrade and manage vCenter servers and any other hypervisor environments.
Manage the Virtual Server Infrastructure.
Manage the Infrastructural Servers for the Virtual Desktop Environment.
Manage and maintain all active directory servers.
Manage and maintain the Veeam Backup Environment.
Manage and maintain file servers.
Guide and direct installation of various application servers.
Understanding and knowledge of Windows Server internals or Linux fundamentals to include DNS, DHCP, AD, and server replication methods.
Assures the College's server requirements are met with the highest level of performance and reliability in maintaining the hardware and software components of the College’s infrastructure by providing system administration for information technology related hardware, operating systems, databases, and applications.
Create and maintain clear and concise documentation for system configurations, procedures, and incident reports.
Works with Purchasing Services to prepare and evaluate bid specifications for the purchase and maintenance of server hardware, and software.
Communicates issues to vendor technical support and follow through until resolved, coordinating and performing required upgrades, fixes, and patches.
Maintains and manages active directory domain environments, IP addresses, DHCP servers, Domain Name Services (DNS), Radius, and other servers and software systems on both physical and hypervisor server environments.
Assists with maintaining e-mail systems, consisting of data integration between active directory, an identity management system, and other systems.
Assists with the installation, support, and secure applicable versions of Windows Server.
Assists with the installation, operation, and maintenance support for VMware infrastructure, virtual environments, and thin clients.
Participates in the planning and implementation and maintaining of a comprehensive life-cycle plan on all hypervisor hardware, servers and supporting software.
Assists in deploying new integrations with the colleges IT infrastructure, as well as with the maintenance of the integrations with the colleges IT infrastructure.
Ensures system security across the enterprise while adhering to security best practices. Maintains confidentiality regarding information processed, stored, or accessed by the networks.
Develops, tests, and deploys scripts using PowerShell, batch files, other scripting languages, and scheduled tasks as needed.
Helps to ensure the availability of computer resources by assisting with disaster prevention and recovery efforts caused by events like power outages, hardware failures, etc.
Executes responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and the college’s policies, which includes the Code of Ethics.
Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Manager of IT Infrastructure.
Contributes to the overall success of Information Technology by performing all other essential duties as assigned.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer information technology, or related field.
Three years of experience in server management and hypervisor virtual server deployments is required. Work experience in a higher education environment is preferred.

Supplemental Information

KNOWLEDGE:

Proven experience as a System Administrator, Network Administrator or similar role.
Knowledge and experience with computer security systems, standards, and compliance.
Knowledge and experience with online and server-based application systems.
Knowledge and experience with various operating systems, preferably Windows server.
Knowledge and experience with virtualization software, preferably VMware.
Knowledge of information technology, computer operations, servers, and database processing.
Knowledge and experience with Office 365 Admin Center.
Knowledge of MCCC’s vision, mission, and values and a commitment to further its educational goals and strategic plans.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of MCCC and skill in providing administrative support to such activities.
Knowledge and proficiency of office technology skills including Microsoft products, virtual platforms, and a willingness to learn and master new technologies as needed.
Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling and the correct usage of the English language.
Knowledge of VA certification process preferred.

Skill in diagnosing computer operating problems.
Skill in maintaining and updating records and related systems by displaying strong attention to detail, dedication to customer service, and a team approach to work.
Skill and proficiency in the use of office equipment and technology, computers and related software, such as word processing and spreadsheets, and the ability to master new technologies.

Skill in developing, implementing, and maintaining procedures to enhance efficiency in department operations and coordinate activities across departments.
