Position Summary & Responsibilities:
The Literacy unit on the Teaching and Learning (TAL) team provides support to Kansas educators, the Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE) and the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) on literacy-specific initiatives to include professional learning, Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA) compliance for dyslexia, and the recommendations and requirements aligned with the Kansas school improvement model, recommendations of the legislative dyslexia task force and in support of other legislative requirements. Specifically, this position serves to collaborate with the Literacy Unit assistant director to provide guidance and support for systems as they align materials and practices with the science of reading, specifically in implementation of structured literacy as a model of literacy instruction. Responsibilities include coordination and support a regional support network for structured literacy supports and coaching, development and provision of literacy professional learning, collaborative support of statewide agency expectations for higher education standards and program review to ensure that the science of reading is embedded in teacher preparation programs. This individual collaborates with agency staff, school districts, professional organizations and higher education partners to advance statewide priorities and ensure effective program implementation. This position is primarily office-based within the agency, and regular, reliable on-site attendance is required to support collaboration, staff supervision and agency operations. Occasional travel may be required to support professional development, KSDE meetings and statewide initiatives.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Six years of experience in a field directly related to curriculum and instruction, educational administration, educational policy or other education area that meets the needs of the agency. A degree is not required, but can be used to substitute for experience as deemed relevant by the agency.
Preferred Skills and/or Qualifications:

Master’s degree in field directly related to curriculum and instruction, educational administration, educational policy or other education area;

Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Local Certified Facilitator/ LETRS trained;

Reading specialist endorsement;

Knowledge of current research and issues related to curriculum and instruction;

Knowledge of the Kansas School Improvement Model;

Broad knowledge of educational issues;

Basic knowledge of testing/assessment principles and practices;

Knowledge and skills related to group dynamics and team participation and facilitation;

Effective teaming, interpersonal, staff development and facilitation skills;

Knowledge of federal grant writing and reporting protocols;

Skills in report writing and communication of findings to a range of audiences;

Excellent public relation and communications skills;

Effective problem-solving, planning, and decision-making skills; and

Ability to design and implement programs and facilitate staff development.
Preferred Experience:
Experience with elementary, middle school and/or high school instruction.
