Full Job Description

The Ombudsman Office is hiring for the position of Assistant Ombudsman

The Ombudsman Office was founded in 1971 by the Montgomery County, Ohio Commissioners, the City of Dayton Commissioners and the Dayton Board of Education. The purpose of the Ombudsman Office is to investigate complaints about administrative acts of government for residents of Montgomery County. Such agencies include Montgomery County departments; the Job Center; government-sponsored housing; the Social Security Administration; City of Dayton departments; public schools; local municipalities and townships within Montgomery County.

Assistant Ombudsman Responsibilities include:

Receiving inquiries from citizens by phone or in person, and through mail or e-mail
Interviewing to determine if information and brief assistance is needed or if investigation of a complaint is required. Provide adequate referral resources for inquiries when callers’ problems do not constitute a case for Ombudsman services.
Reliability, trustworthiness, confidentiality and competency are required for all staff.
Documenting all complaints handled in the Ombudsman Office computer system
Providing information to citizens and maintaining a record of information and referral requests
Investigating complaints and undertaking the necessary research for resolution
Assist in fundraising and public affairs activities as requested; making presentations to groups of people
Travel within Montgomery County as required

Skills Required:

Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
Ability to communicate with the public through conversation and in writing
Ability to keep accurate notes
Ability to be objective, polite and inquisitive
Negotiation and problem-resolution skills
Knowledge about government programs
Strong background in advocacy and a commitment to serving others and the principle of equal justice.
Only individuals who meet the minimum qualifications will be contacted.

Formal training is provided in the office through the supervisory relationship. Staff meetings are held weekly, at which time case strategy and general office procedures are discussed. Additional case strategy work strategy sessions are held as needed.

Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Assistant Ombudsman position is a full-time 37 ½ hour-a-week position.

Salary: $45,000
