Job Summary:
About the Tucson FTTP Program
The City of Tucson has launched an ambitious Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) program to enable high-speed fiber broadband to every home and business across the city.
Bonfire Infrastructure Group serves as the City’s implementation partner, coordinating permitting, construction, and inspection for FTTP Licensees. The Field Inspector will be a Bonfire-contracted professional embedded with the City’s FTTP Program team, directly supporting program implementation and serving as the on-site presence for quality assurance, safety, and compliance across construction activities in the public right-of-way.
The Field Inspector plays a critical role in monitoring and documenting fiber construction activities throughout Tucson. Working closely with the City’s Transportation & Mobility Department (DTM) and Licensee contractors, this position ensures that all FTTP work in the public right-of-way meets City engineering standards, permit conditions, and the requirements of the FTTP License Agreement.
This is a highly visible, field-based role for someone who combines sound construction judgment with disciplined documentation, clear communication, and a strong commitment to public safety and quality.
What You Get to Do (Duties/Responsibilities):
· Conduct daily field inspections of FTTP construction to verify compliance with City permits, approved plans, and safety standards.
· Perform QA/QC checks on trenching, restoration, traffic control, and installation methods (including micro-trenching).
· Document construction progress with detailed notes, photos, and inspection reports.
· Communicate field issues promptly to Bonfire Program Management and City staff.
· Monitor contractor adherence to safety procedures and jobsite best practices.
· Participate in joint site visits with ISPs, contractors, and City inspectors to resolve construction or restoration issues.
· Support tracking and verification of permit close-outs and right-of-way restoration activities.
· Escalate non-compliance, delays, or public concerns to the Program Manager.
· Assist with data entry, documentation, and reporting to maintain program-wide transparency.
What We Are Searching For (Required Skills/Abilities):
· High school diploma or GED.
· Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
· Knowledge of fiber or utility construction methods and right-of-way requirements.
· Ability to work outdoors for extended periods (6-8 hours on feet).
· Understanding of traffic control, JSA procedures, and construction safety practices.
· Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
· Ability to interpret construction plans and record field data accurately.
· Proficient with smartphones, tablets, and basic office software (Outlook, Excel, Teams).
Education/Certifications/Experience:
· 5-10 years of utility construction or inspection experience (telecom, fiber, or municipal projects preferred).
· Experience with public right-of-way inspection for city or state agencies.
· Familiarity with MAG standards, OSHA safety regulations, and permit compliance processes.
· Experience using digital inspection and asset-tracking tools (e.g., GIS, Sortly, OciusX).
Work Environment & Expectations:
· Fieldwork is required, with regular exposure to active construction sites, vehicles, public right-of-way conditions, and varied weather.
· Safety gear and adherence to applicable OSHA, City, and company safety protocols are required.
· The role requires extended periods outdoors and on foot, along with regular use of a smartphone or tablet for field documentation.
· The Field Inspector is expected to communicate inspection progress and field issues promptly to Bonfire Program Management and City staff.
