Seasonal Registered Nurse - OB/Post-Partum - Per Diem - 36 hours weekly

Shift: 6:45am - 7:15pm

Seasonal per diem requirements:

Must have 1+ years work experience as RN in OB/PP
Must work 36 hours per week, for 13 weeks, which may be extended at administration discretion.

Job Description:

PATIENT POPULATION:
The patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Unit Director, Clinical Manager and Charge Nurse, the Registered Nurse (R.N.) independently provides holistic, individualized care using the Nursing Process for patients routinely seen on the unit. Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical competency, Nursing judgment, teaching skills, and a commitment to improving the quality of patient care. Independently performs general and unit-specific clinical skills. Contributes to the Sierra View Medical Center Department of Patient Care Services and the Nursing profession in a positive manner.

Is responsible for the assessment, treatment or care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs. Possesses knowledge of growth and development and has an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups.

Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California. Must have and maintain current BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care. Must have and maintain ACLS certification or obtain within six (6) months of assignment to department. Must have and maintain NRP, EFM or obtain within 6 months of assignment to department. Six (6) month time frame is at the discretion of the Department Leader.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer skills.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California. Must have and maintain current BLS Card, required. Must have and maintain ACLS certification or obtain within six (6) months of assignment to department. Must have and maintain NRP, EFM or obtain within 6 months of assignment to department. Six (6) month time frame is at the discretion of the Department Director.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Indicates Essential Function

1 * Is responsible for the assessment, treatment and/or care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs. Possesses knowledge of growth and development and has an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups.
2 * Utilizes holistic assessment skills, recognizing subtle, covert or abnormal signs and symptoms that include at least one of the following: involvement of patient/significant other, discharge needs, psychosocial needs, biophysical needs, environmental needs, teaching needs.
3 * Identifies nursing diagnosis and interdependent nursing problems and selects applicable nursing care standards to guide patient care. Recognizes issues/concerns that could impact development of mutual goals.
4 Ensures that the Care Plan is specific and unique to the individual patient utilizing Interdependent Nursing Standards and the discharge needs of complex/multi-system patients.
5* According to established clinical policy, procedure and standards, the R.N. safely performs nursing care including safe administration of medication, troubleshoots equipment and demonstrates skill in clinical problem solving.
6 Ensures that the nursing care provided is consistent with the established Nursing Plan of Care, the Medical Plan of Care and the ages of the patients served.
7 * The effectiveness of the Plan of Care is evaluated and communicated through exchange report; recommendations are made for future care and are consistent with current documentation.
8 * Communicates evaluation of, or changes in, patient status providing supportive data to the physician or health care team as appropriate.
9 * Demonstrates and documents as it relates to nursing practice adherence to the Joint Commission "National Performance Goals for Hospitals" as defined by Scope of Practice.
10 * Documentation reflects compliance with established Hospital policies and procedures.
11* Demonstrates an understanding of the use, actions and interactions of drugs used in combination for patients with multi-system problems.
12 * Completes required unit specific performance criteria checklist.
13 * Demonstrates proper Infection Prevention skills to include Standardized Protocols or procedures related to central lines and indwelling Foley catheters and Bakari Balloon.
14* Reports quality or Risk Management issues through appropriate lines of authority, i.e. administrative or clinical.
15* Maintains current knowledge of health care trends that affect the clinical practice of Nursing on the unit.
16 Demonstrates standards of documentation as evidenced by individual chart review and no letters of education in file.
17 * Upholds all aspects of the Nursing Practice Act as defined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
18 * Provides evidence of adherence to all nine (9) ANA Code of Ethics for the Nursing profession.

OBSTETRICS DEPARTMENT POSITION SPECIFICS:
1 Provides nursing care to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, neonatal, and gynecological geriatric patients.
2 Demonstrates knowledge of maternal and fetal complications and implements appropriate nursing interventions.
3 Understands and applies nursing responsibilities throughout all stages of labor.
4 Performs comprehensive physical assessments of the newborn in accordance with established policies and procedures.
5 Demonstrates competency in caring for patients experiencing fetal demise, stillbirth, or neonatal death with compassion and professionalism.
6 Accurately interprets and documents fetal monitoring strips and identifies abnormal findings.
8 * Ensures appropriate patient stabilization, transfer, and disposition in accordance with EMTALA regulations.
9 Demonstrates knowledge of, safely administers, and calculates medications in the Maternal Child Health Department, including pediatric and neonatal dosages.
10 * "Demonstrates knowledge and application of sterile technique and equipment in the Delivery Room and Operating Room.including but not limited to:
Oxygen delivery systems, Pulse oximeter, Radiant warmer, Neonatal monitors, Suction equipment, Catheters, Neonatal emergency equipment,Bilirubin lights, bilirubin meter, and bilirubin blankets"
11 * Obtains Performs and documents Newborn Metabolic Screening/ Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD) specimens per protocol.
12 * Educates patients and support persons on breathing and relaxation techniques during labor.
13 * Provides breastfeeding education and actively encourages and supports breastfeeding
14 Maintains current knowledge of nursing practice and Maternal Child Health standards.
