SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of designee, the Utility Custodian performs routine cleaning tasks at various school sites, such as sweeping, polishing, vacuuming, waxing, moving, rearranging furniture and equipment, and graffiti removal. This classification is distinguished from others in the Custodian series in that there will be no set schedule or assigned school site. The Utility Custodian will be assigned temporarily to different District sites for day, afternoon or evening hours as needed, and will be expected to follow cleaning procedures in place at individual schools; may work alone and in small groups on other assignments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. Using industrial cleaners, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors
in classrooms, offices, nurses and faculty rooms; cleans, mops, and disinfects multi-purpose rooms, restrooms; empties and cleans waste containers.
Clean work surfaces, chalkboards; cleans and polishes desks, woodwork, doors and counters.
Assists other personnel in lifting and storing of supplies; may assist with duties in the warehouse when not performing custodial duties.
Makes minor site repairs and adjustments to equipment such as desktops, cafeteria tables, classroom furniture, tightening doors, hinges and knobs, repairing pencil sharpeners, replacing light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, as well as spot painting.
Maintains custodial equipment.
Performs special custodial work upon request of faculty members and supervisory personnel.
Operates cleaning equipment such as a rug shampoo machines, vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, leaf blowers, power washers, sweepers, etc.
Unplugs stopped toilets, sinks or fountains.
Arranges rooms with chairs and tables for meetings, sports events, and activities.
Performs daily security checks; secures facility; sets alarms.
May temporarily be assigned limited Head of Plant responsibilities.
Performs assigned duties in a safe manner.
Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application) KNOWLEDGE OF/ABILITY TO:
Methods and equipment used in the cleaning of floors, walls, and fixtures.
Cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodian work.
Safe work practices.
Read, write, and speak English sufficiently to successfully perform required duties.
Hear, speak and write to receive and exchange information.
Read and follow label directions when using any materials and/or equipment
Exercise extreme caution when using hazardous materials and/or equipment, including the possibility of blood borne pathogens, by adhering to the specified warnings and required safety standards and protocols.
Learn procedures for use of, and accounting for, fire extinguishers, including participating in the applicable updating program.
Use small power hand tools such as screwdrivers, drills, etc.
Learn to operate motorized sweepers.
Understand and follow a varied work schedule.
Perform manual labor, including stooping, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying, loading and unloading, and standing/walking for long periods of time.
Work alone productively for long periods of time.
Complete repetitive tasks.
Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, students and the public.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent. Additional related experience and/or training that would indicate possession of the above skills and abilities.
Possess, and maintain as a condition for continuing employment, a California driver’s license and insurability.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.)
Physical strength/agility sufficient to perform a wide variety of frequent physical tasks including moving equipment/furniture and operating equipment.
Lift 50 pounds, carry, climb, stoop, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, walk and perform demanding physical tasks.
Indoors and outdoors work environment; subject to noise from equipment operation; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors, which may require the use of protective equipment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment, hand and power tools; seeing to observe needed and completed repairs; climbing ladders and working from heights; reaching overhead and horizontally to shelve and retrieve items in high places; standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist.
Successful passage of post-offer/pre-employment physical required.
Pay: $20.73 - $35.06 per hour
