Full Job Description

The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) is North America’s largest mariners’ service agency, with an annual operating budget in excess of $8 million. Founded in 1834, SCI provides pastoral care services, maritime education and training, and mariner advocacy for the workers who transport billions of tons of cargo each year across the world’s oceans and along our nation’s inland waterways.

Job Overview

SCI is seeking an HR Intern to support the HR Director with hands-on projects in recruitment, HRIS, HR compliance, employee relations, and HR operations.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student pursuing a Master’s degree in Human Resources or a related field who is seeking practical, real-world experience across multiple areas of human resources. Qualified students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field will also be considered.

The HR Intern will work directly with the HR Director and gain exposure to a broad range of HR functions within a mission-driven nonprofit organization.

Key Responsibilities

· Post job openings, screen resumes, and conduct phone interviews.

· Assist with recruitment activities and candidate communications.

· Assist with updating the Employee Manual and benefits-related documents.

· Assist with projects to review and update job descriptions.

· Assist with monitoring and follow-up of bi-weekly timecard submissions in ADP.

· Assist with HRIS-related activities and maintaining accurate employee records.

· Provide HR support to employees and managers on routine HR questions and processes, escalating issues to the HR Director as appropriate.

· Assist with HR compliance and employee relations projects.

· Contribute to a variety of HR projects and initiatives as assigned.

Required Skills & Competencies

· Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Human Resources, Human Resource Management, Human Resources Development, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or a related field preferred.

· Candidates currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Human Resources Management or a related field will also be considered.

· Coursework or prior experience in at least two areas of human resources preferred.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills.

· Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.

· Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

· Ability to prioritize tasks effectively while supporting multiple projects simultaneously.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint.

· Ability to collaborate effectively with employees and managers across diverse teams.

· Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in Human Resources.

Physical & Other Requirements

· Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

· Ability to use a computer, keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other standard office equipment.

· Ability to read and review documents, both electronically and in paper format.

· Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, video conference, and email.

· Occasionally may need to stand, walk, bend, or reach to retrieve files or office materials.

· May occasionally lift and carry office supplies or files weighing up to 10 pounds.

Ideal Candidate

We are particularly interested in students currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Human Resources or a related field who are looking for an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world HR environment. Strong undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field are also encouraged to apply.

Pay: $17.50 per hour
