Full Job Description

Job Summary: The Overnight Shelter Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and supportive overnight operation of the shelter facility. They supervise overnight staff, ensure resident safety and compliance with agency and DSS standards, manage incidents and crises, and maintain accurate documentation. The individual serves as the senior on-site staff during the overnight hours and is an essential leader in helping the shelter meet its mission of providing safe temporary housing and support to vulnerable populations.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED required, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field preferred. Experience working in a shelter, residential, or human services setting, preferably overnight or shift work. Supervisory experience strongly preferred. Must pass applicable background checks and meet DSS requirements. Successful completion of all required training within 90 days of employment required. Ability to work overnight hours, weekends, and holidays.

Skills & Knowledge: Strong leadership, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills; Good verbal and written communication skills; documentation proficiency. Knowledge of trauma-informed care and understanding of homelessness or related fields; demonstrated ability to understand the challenges and interact effectively with homeless singles or families. Computer literacy (MS Word/Excel or equivalent) helpful for reporting and documentation.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

· Supervise the shift staff: assign/delegate tasks, monitor performance, provide guidance and support.

· Ensure the safety, security, and wellbeing of residents and staff: check access doors, monitor behavior, intervene in emergencies.

· Remain alert, and present on site throughout the shift; ensure the facility remains staffed and covered.

· Oversee admission/discharge/transfer processes : welcome new residents, conduct intakes, ensure records are updated.

· Coordinate and maintain documentation and reporting: incident reports, shift log, resident census, daily shift summaries, safety checklists.

· Enforce agency policies, shelter rules, resident agreements, code of conduct, and confidentiality standards.

· Monitor the physical environment: ensure cleanliness, order, maintenance issues, and health & safety compliance.

· Respond to crises and emergencies: de-escalate conflict, coordinate with emergency services, and manage non-compliant behavior.

· Provide or coordinate resident support: assist with resident needs and help clients comply with program expectations.

· Liaise with day and shift staff and leadership: provide hand-off reports and ensure continuity of care.

· Assist with Supervising inventory, supplies, meal preparation (if applicable), facility opening/closing tasks.

· Participate in staff training, supervision of the team, and performance monitoring of staff.

· Aid in data collection and quality assurance as required by agency and DSS standards.

· Complete any and all other tasks assigned by supervisors/Program Manager

· Some overtime may be required during the planning and execution of special events.
