Data Engineer / Microsoft SQL Database Administrator
The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) is seeking a skilled Data Engineer / Microsoft SQL Database Administrator to design, maintain, and improve our organization’s data systems and cloud data infrastructure. This position combines Microsoft SQL Server database administration with modern data engineering responsibilities, including data pipeline development, cloud data lake management, database performance optimization, and support for analytics and reporting.
The successful candidate will have strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server, T-SQL, and database administration best practices, as well as hands-on knowledge of Microsoft cloud data technologies including Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Data Lake Storage, and Microsoft Fabric. This role works closely with analysts, application developers, business users, and IT staff to ensure data is secure, reliable, accurate, well-organized, and available for operational and strategic decision-making.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administer, monitor, secure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server databases across development, testing, and production environments.

Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning strategies for SQL Server workloads.

Manage database backups, restores, disaster recovery procedures, maintenance plans, and high-availability solutions.

Build, maintain, and troubleshoot ETL processes that integrate data from multiple systems.

Design and support data pipelines using tools such as SQL Server Integration Services, Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric pipelines, notebooks, or similar technologies.

Work with Azure Cosmos DB to support NoSQL data storage, querying, indexing, partitioning, performance monitoring, and integration with downstream data platforms.

Support Microsoft Fabric OneLake environment, including lakehouses, warehouses, pipelines, notebooks, semantic models, and integration with Power BI.

Ensure data integrity, quality, privacy, security, and compliance with organizational policies and applicable regulations.

Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand data needs and deliver effective solutions.

Assist with database migrations, upgrades, automation, modernization efforts, and cloud data platform initiatives.

Promote best practices for data governance, data access, metadata management, and secure data sharing.
Qualifications
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
-
Associate degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related field, preferred; equivalent professional experience may be considered.

Professional experience in database administration, data engineering, database development, or related technical role.

Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server database administration.

Strong proficiency in T-SQL, including complex queries, stored procedures, functions, views, indexing, and query optimization.

Experience designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting relational database structures.

Experience with database backup and recovery, performance tuning, monitoring, indexing, security, and access management.

Experience developing and supporting ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines. SSIS and Azure Data Factory experience a must.

Experience working with Azure Cosmos DB, including NoSQL data models, partitioning concepts, indexing, querying, and integration with other data systems.

Experience working with Azure Data Lake Storage, including storage organization, security, file formats, and data lifecycle management.

Understanding of modern cloud data architecture patterns, including delta lakes, lakehouses, warehouses, and medallion-style data organization.

Familiarity with data quality, data governance, data privacy, and secure data access practices. Informatica experience is a plus.

Ability to troubleshoot complex database design, data integration, and cloud data platform issues.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with technical and non-technical teams.
