Lead Finish Carpenter / Maintenance Technician

Merit Management Group | Johnston, IA

Merit Management Group is looking for a skilled Lead Finish Carpenter / Maintenance Technician to join our team. This is first and foremost a finish carpentry role, much of our work calls for high-quality, detailed carpentry. Alongside the carpentry, you'll also be a versatile, hands-on problem-solver who helps with general maintenance and repairs across our building systems and serves as the manager's right hand — helping lead the crew, keeping jobs on track, and stepping in when the manager is out. Position Overview

As our Lead Finish Carpenter / Maintenance Technician, finish carpentry is your primary focus, you'll handle carpentry repairs, installations, and finish work where craftsmanship really matters. Beyond the carpentry, you'll also pitch in as a go-to problem-solver, and act as the manager's right hand: helping guide the team, coordinating the crew's daily work, and keeping things running smoothly when the manager is unavailable. No two days look the same.

Key Responsibilities

Perform finish carpentry — repairs, installations, and finish work — as the core, everyday focus of the role.
Set the standard for quality, safety, and professionalism on every job.
Serve as the manager's right hand — help lead and direct the crew, and step in to keep things running when the manager is out.
Support scheduling, coordination, and prioritization of the team's daily work.
Conduct routine inspections of equipment, facilities, and common areas to identify maintenance needs or safety concerns.
Perform preventive maintenance tasks according to established schedules.
Install, repair, or replace fixtures, equipment, and components as needed.
Respond to work orders and maintenance requests in a timely, professional manner.
Coordinate with contractors and vendors when specialized repairs are required.
Document completed work, parts used, and observations in maintenance logs or systems.
Assist with emergency maintenance situations as needed, including after-hours or on-call support.
Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.

Qualifications

Strong, proven finish carpentry experience — the primary skill this role is built around.
Leadership ability and the confidence to help guide a team as the manager's right hand.
Proven experience in building maintenance and repair across multiple trades.
Strong organizational, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of the job.
Valid driver's license.

Compensation

$30–$35 per hour, based on experience. Compensation will reflect the skills, background, and leadership you bring to the team.
