Full Job Description

This is a part-time position that includes scheduled on-call shifts being paid an On-call hourly rate of $1.50, transitioning to $24.91 per hour when called in to respond to death investigation.

Reside within a 15-mile radius of county line.

Waushara County is seeking a motivated and compassionate individual to join our Medical Examiner team as a part-time On Call Deputy Medical Examiner. If you are passionate about forensic science and thrive in an investigative role, this is the perfect opportunity to make a meaningful impact within our community.

As a Deputy Medical Examiner, you will investigate and report on deaths involving suspicious, unusual, or unexplained circumstances. You will gather physical evidence, conduct interviews, assist in post-mortem examinations, and collaborate closely with law enforcement and medical professionals to uncover the truth behind each case. This role allows you to be at the forefront of forensic investigations, helping bring closure to families and ensuring justice.

Who You Are:

You possess an Associate degree in Paramedic, Nursing, Biology, Medicine, Pre-med, Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
You have at least one year of experience in medical investigations or a closely related area.
You have a strong ability to think critically under pressure, attention to detail, and a passion for solving puzzles.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Investigates deaths in accordance with Wisconsin State Statues 979.01, including evaluating death scenes, examining and preserving evidence, investigating the circumstances of death by obtaining personal data and medical history through records and interviews; and establishes initial assessment of cause and manner of death, as natural, suicidal, accidental, homicidal or undetermined.

2. Determines need for autopsy, toxicology, radiology, etc.; involvement from other agencies/departments such as law enforcement/detective, crime lab, District Attorney, pathologist, etc.; obtains appropriate records from law enforcement, heath care establishments, etc. to coordinate a comprehensive, multidisciplinary investigation.

3. Prepares and maintains reports documenting the facts and findings of all death investigations and other activities pertinent to the investigation.

4. Determines positive identification of the decedent.

5. Collects, maintains and disposes of evidence; obtains bodily specimens; maintains and sorts records and documents; maintains, sorts and reviews photographs.

6. Attends training meetings and seminars; participates in task forces and review teams; maintains current training, and in-service seminars as needed.

7. Provides court testimony as needed.

8. Prepares and submits reports, documentation and correspondence including medical examiner’s reports, investigative photographs, post-mortem examination forms, and evidence forms. May prepare death certificates, cremation permits and disinterment permits under the discretion of the Medical Examiner in their absence.

9. Assists in determining next of kin with notification of the death. Answers family questions and concerns regarding deceased.
