Key Responsibilities
Day-to-day responsibilities of this position:
-
Process wastewater samples for molecular laboratory analysis in accordance with established protocols.

Perform nucleic acid extraction from wastewater samples using manual and automated methodologies.

Prepare, perform, and analyze qRT-PCR and other molecular assays, including PCR plate setup, instrument operation, and data interpretation.

Analyze, compile, and accurately report laboratory results in a timely manner.

Collaborate with wastewater testing personnel and provide regular updates and findings to the surveillance team.

Conduct assay validations, verify test performance, and support the implementation and evaluation of new laboratory methods.

Perform routine maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance.
Maintain laboratory biosafety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance through proper documentation, housekeeping, and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Qualifications
Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:
-
Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related science
Preferred or trainable/on-the-job qualifications:
-
Previous experience working in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) clinical and/or research laboratory.

Experience performing quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and digital PCR (dPCR) assays.

Strong knowledge of molecular biology laboratory techniques and procedures.
-
Experience writing and revising Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Familiarity with laboratory quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) programs.

Knowledge of medical and environmental microbiology.

Experience handling potentially infectious biological samples in accordance with biosafety protocols.

Experience with nucleic acid extraction and handling from a variety of sample types.

Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting automated laboratory instrumentation and workflows
-
Experience with programming or scripting for laboratory data analysis and automation is a plus.
