Full Job Description

The Napa Valley Education Foundation is building a team of part-time, seasonal instructors to lead hands-on classes, camps, workshops, field trips, and enrichment experiences at their new community-based and youth-focused Discovery Campus. The Discovery Campus, formerly The Oxbow School, was gifted to NVEF in 2025 and was quickly converted into a community-based hub of youth-focused programming. Programs are designed to help youth “find their one thing” that engages them in learning, and may even inspire them to explore a potential career pathway.

Instructors will be hired based on their area of expertise, program needs, student interest, and availability. NVEF is seeking a diverse group of creative professionals who can inspire school-age students through meaningful, hands-on learning.

Discovery Campus instructors may teach after-school classes, weekend workshops, school break camps, summer programs, school-day field trip rotations, or special projects. Some instructors may teach a single short-term class or workshop, while others may teach multiple sessions throughout the year.

NVEF is especially interested in instructors who can teach welding, introduction to the trades, robotics, FIRST Robotics League mentorship, culinary arts, makerspace skills, sound recording production, theater, and project-based STEM. We also welcome course ideas from qualified instructors in visual arts, dance, theater, photography, podcasting, digital design, woodworking, construction, machining, fabrication, architecture, coding, electronics, environmental education, gardening, sewing, fashion, creative writing, storytelling, and other hands-on creative or technical fields.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and teach engaging, hands-on learning experiences in the instructor’s area of expertise.
Lead classes, camps, workshops, field trip rotations, or special projects for school-age students.
Create a positive, safe, inclusive, and age-appropriate learning environment.
Develop basic lesson plans, supply lists, project outlines, and learning goals in coordination with NVEF staff.
Connect instruction to creativity, skill-building, confidence, teamwork, career exploration, and student voice.
Maintain appropriate safety practices, especially when using tools, kitchen equipment, technology, instruments, or specialized materials.
Prepare materials and workspaces before instruction and assist with cleanup, storage, and care of equipment after each session.
Communicate professionally with NVEF staff regarding scheduling, supplies, student needs, safety concerns, and program feedback.
Follow all NVEF policies and procedures related to student safety, supervision, conduct, facilities, and equipment use.

Qualifications:

Professional background, classroom experience, youth instruction experience, or demonstrated expertise in the subject area the applicant proposes to teach.
Ability to teach, mentor, and encourage school-age students in a hands-on learning environment.
Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
Ability to create lessons and projects that are engaging, realistic, safe, and appropriate for the age group being served.
Commitment to student safety, inclusion, creativity, and skill-building.
For culinary, tool-based, trade, engineering, welding, robotics, or makerspace courses, demonstrated safety knowledge and experience using relevant tools, equipment, or materials is required.

Requirements:

Selected applicants must complete required fingerprinting/background clearance before working with students.
Additional training, certifications, or safety documentation may be required for certain course areas.
Ability to lead active, hands-on instruction in a classroom, studio, kitchen, makerspace, outdoor area, or field trip setting.
Ability to stand, move around the instructional space, set up materials, and support students during projects.
Ability to lift, carry, or move instructional supplies and equipment as needed for the course assignment.

Compensation:

This is a part-time, seasonal, hourly position. The rate is $35-$50 per hour. Hours will vary based on program schedule, instructor availability, student enrollment, and area of instruction.
