Full Job Description

Shelter Advocate, Pool Staff (On-Call)

Company
At Coalition for Family Harmony, we believe every survivor deserves safety, compassion, and hope. Through advocacy, education, and community partnerships, we empower survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to rebuild their lives.

We're looking for compassionate, dependable, bilingual professionals to join our Housing Services Program as Shelter Advocates (Pool Staff). In this role, you'll provide life-changing support to survivors while helping create a safe, welcoming environment in our confidential emergency shelters.

Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.

What You'll Do
As a Shelter Client Advocate, you'll provide crisis intervention, advocacy, and daily support to survivors and their families by:

Answering our 24-hour bilingual crisis hotline, providing crisis intervention, emotional support, safety planning, referrals, and community resources.
Supporting residents living in our confidential emergency shelters by creating a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment.
Conducting shelter intake and exit appointments while explaining shelter policies and available services.
Providing case management and advocacy, including assistance with:
Employment and income resources
Resume development and job searches
Housing resources
Safety planning
Assisting survivors with restraining orders, court accompaniment, child custody resources, and navigating legal and social service systems.
Dispatching on-call Rape Crisis Advocates to accompany survivors during forensic medical examinations.
Coordinating with law enforcement, hospitals, medical professionals, and community partners to ensure survivors receive comprehensive support.
Providing transportation to approved appointments using a company vehicle, when needed.
Distributing food, clothing, hygiene products, household supplies, and other essential items to shelter residents.
Assisting with shelter donations, inventory, and supply organization.
Participating in ongoing training related to domestic violence, trauma-informed care, shelter operations, and survivor advocacy.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Education

· Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field preferred, but not required.

Certifications

· Ability to obtain Domestic Violence Counselor Certification (California Evidence Code 1037.1) within one year of hire.

· Ability to obtain Sexual Assault Counselor Certification (California Evidence Code 1035.2) within one year of hire.

· Completion of agency LGBTQ+ 101 training within six months of hire.

Experience & Skills

· Bilingual in English and Spanish (required).

· Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, crisis intervention, shelters, or human services is highly preferred.

· Strong crisis intervention, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

· Professional, compassionate, and trauma-informed approach when working with survivors from diverse backgrounds.

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

· Ability to accurately maintain client documentation and enter data into the agency database after training.

· Knowledge of California family law procedures is a plus.

Physical & Position Requirements

· Ability to work onsite at our confidential emergency shelters located in West Ventura County.

· Ability to climb one flight of stairs and work within a two-story shelter environment.

· Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift up to 20 pounds.

· Comfortable working in an active residential setting that may include adults, children, and varying noise levels.

· Valid California Driver's License, current automobile insurance, and an acceptable DMV driving record.

· Must successfully pass a Live Scan background check.

Schedule and Compensation

· $19.00 per hour, paid semi-monthly

· Schedule: This position fills in for 8-hour shifts as needed. Shifts are 7 am – 3 pm, 3 pm – 11 pm, and 11 pm – 7 am.
