Full Job Description

Job Summary

As a Service Writer, you will serve as the central liaison between boat owners and our factory-certified service technicians. This role translates customer concerns into actionable repair orders, provides realistic cost and delivery estimates, sources and order parts, tracks job status, and delivers an exceptional ownership experience from intake through water delivery.

Responsibilities

Greet boat owners, perform detailed walk-around inspections on trailered boats or vessel dockside intakes, and document primary concerns, routine maintenance needs, and cosmetic condition
Create detailed, clear repair orders (ROs) translating customer complaints into accurate technical notes for certified marine technicians
Calculate estimates for parts, labor, shop supplies, and sublet repairs. Present recommended preventive maintenance and factory-scheduled services (e.g., 100-hour service, winterization, commissioner services)
Dispatch work orders to marine technicians based on skill level and availability; track work-in-progress to meet scheduled completion times
Proactively update customers on repair status, warranty approvals, parts delays, or required authorization changes via phone, text, or email
Coordinate with marine manufacturer warranty reps (e.g., outboard, sterndrive, and hull manufacturers) to process claims, submit pre-authorizations, and track coverage limits
Review final repair invoices for accuracy against work performed, collect customer payments, and conduct a thorough walk-through/hand-off at pickup

Qualifications

2+ years of customer service or service writing experience (marine dealership preferred; powersports, automotive, or RV experience highly applicable)
Familiarity with marine engine systems (outboards, sterndrives, inboards, jet drives), boat hull structures, marine electronics, trailer equipment, and seasonal maintenance cycles
Proficiency with Dealer Management Systems (DMS) (e.g., Lightspeed, DockMaster, BiT Dealer Software, or similar), MS Office, and digital multi-point inspection software
Ability to navigate docks, climb aboard vessels of varying sizes, lift up to 50 lbs, and work outdoors in varying seasonal weather conditions.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (boating safety certificate or vessel handling experience is a plus).
