Summary: Creates a developmentally appropriate library/media/information technology program that promotes learning and personal growth; motivates students to develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to provide a strong foundation for learning, as outlined in our district's stated Ends Policy. Responsible for establishing effective relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, and community members to enhance learning opportunities. Subscribes to and applies the principles of Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) for the benefit of student and employee development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.

Serves as a Teacher/Instructional Partner:

Designs, teaches, and assesses learning opportunities that include inquiry, critical thinking, and multiple literacies in order to prepare learners to be college and career ready.
Collaborates with other teachers as an instructional partner in learning opportunities.
Promotes, engages, and motivates students to become life-long learners through reading for pleasure, academic advancement, and to explore various genres in a quest for a better understanding of things and diverse viewpoints.
Actively seeks opportunities for the use of technology in learning. Models the integration of technology in teaching and learning.
Serves as an Information Specialist:

Develops, maintains, and promotes the use of the District’s collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school community. Such as, but not limited to reading for information, reading for pleasure, reading for critical thinking, diverse cultural, and diverse social readings.
Cooperates and networks with other librarians, libraries, and agencies to provide access to educational and technology resources outside the District.
Understands and promotes the ethical use of information, such as but not limited to, copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property.
Evaluates, promotes, and uses existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning, connects the school with the global learning community, and provides equal access to library services.
Collaborates with ITE and other School Librarians to adopt research-based best practices that promote the use of information resources and information technology throughout the District.
Serves as an Instructional Leader:

Advocates for equitable access to information for all learners in the school community.
Serves on school and District decision-making teams, as requested.
Measures the school library/media program according to school, state, and national standards.
Creates a resource-rich physical and virtual environment conducive to active and participatory learning.
Plans and provides professional development for colleagues as required.
Researches relevant and current professional practices and emerging technologies.
Remains current on emerging trends and best practices through active memberships in job-related professional associations, attending professional development training and activities.
Advocates for school library programs and the role of the library program in the educational community.
Serves as a Program Administrator:

Creates and maintains a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, and conducive to student success.
Establishes protocols and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing, and related activities that provide appropriate resources in a timely manner.
Develops school library program goals and objectives that are aligned with school and district long-range continuous improvement plans for improved student learning.
Prepares and administers the school library program budget.
Manages resources and facilities for continuous improvement of the library program.
Participates in the recruiting, hiring, and training of other professionals, educational library assistants, students, and volunteer staff when necessary.
Gathers and analyzes data to improve instruction and to demonstrate correlations between the Standard Library Practice and student achievement.
Participates in professional development activities:

Acquires and demonstrates knowledge of current trends in library science, education, and information technology.
Attends conferences, workshops, and other learning activities.
Performs any other related duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities: Under the direction of the school administration. May oversee the work and training of Library/Media Technicians, other assigned staff, students, volunteers. Monitors student discipline through an appropriate classroom management program such as, but not limited to, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board policies. Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace diversity, sustainability, and delivering exceptional customer service.

Education and/or Experience: Master’s Degree from an American Library Association accredited program or 18 graduate credits from a School Library Media Studies program (or equivalent) including a practicum experience. A minimum of three years of related experience is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Vermont Teaching License with School Librarian endorsement.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school and District objectives and the needs and abilities of assigned students. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents/guardians; Ability to keep current with technology trends and utilize technology to enhance student instruction and learning through the use basic communication and productivity software tools including or equivalent to: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, Destiny Library Catalog, Student Information Systems, and e-mail.
