Design with purpose. Grow with a team that values your ideas.
SPACE Architects + Planners is looking for a talented Architect to join our growing Chicago team. This is one open position, with the title and level—Associate Architect or Senior Associate Architect—determined by experience, skills, and demonstrated capabilities.
Whether you're an architect looking to build on your early-career experience or an experienced professional ready to take greater ownership of projects, we want to hear from you.
We're looking for someone who combines strong design thinking with solid technical skills, takes pride in their work, and enjoys being part of a collaborative team. You'll have the opportunity to contribute to projects from early design concepts through construction administration while working alongside experienced Project Managers, Directors, and Principals.
About SPACE Architects + Planners?
Since 2003, SPACE Architects + Planners has built a collaborative studio where good architecture is a team effort. We believe the best work comes from people who are willing to share ideas, ask questions, and solve problems together. Our team is firmly dedicated to our clients and their projects, both large and small, with experience across a variety of sectors, including luxury single-family homes, multi-family mid-rises, commercial, hospitality, historical, and adaptive reuse.
This variety gives our team the opportunity to work across different project types, challenge themselves creatively, and continue developing their skills.
What You'll Do
Your responsibilities will grow with your experience and level, and may include:
- Contribute to projects through multiple phases, from schematic design through construction administration
- Develop architectural designs that are thoughtful, compelling, and well-resolved
- Produce high-quality architectural drawings, models, presentations, and construction documents
- Use Revit for modeling, sheet composition, and drawing set preparation
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Directors, Principals, consultants, and team members to develop and coordinate project solutions
- Participate in client and consultant coordination
- Identify project challenges and help develop practical, creative solutions
- Conduct field measuring, site observations, and field sketching
- Participate in construction administration activities
- Manage assigned responsibilities, priorities, and deadlines independently
- Continue developing technical and design expertise through hands-on project experience and continuing education
At the Senior Associate level, you'll have the opportunity to take on greater responsibility for project coordination, client and consultant communication, design development, technical documentation, and mentoring less-experienced team members.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a well-rounded architect who:
- Has a genuine passion for architecture and design
- Thinks creatively while understanding the technical realities of building
- Takes ownership of their work and follows through
- Can communicate ideas clearly and work effectively with others
- Is curious, collaborative, and eager to keep learning
- Takes pride in producing thoughtful, high-quality work
- Wants to grow within a team rather than work in isolation
Required:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture from an accredited institution
- 1-3+ years of post-graduate architectural experience
- Proficiency in Revit
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
- Strong architectural design and technical documentation skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively while managing individual responsibilities
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Portfolio showcasing previous work is required for consideration
Preferred:
- Experience with residential, multi-family, commercial, hospitality, historical, and/or adaptive reuse projects
- Construction administration experience
- Experience with client and consultant coordination
- On-site field measuring and sketching experience
- Familiarity with City of Chicago zoning and building codes and applicable IBC requirements
- NCARB Architectural Experience Program (AXP) underway
