Full Job Description

Develop a dynamic, inclusive, mission-focused volunteer program at HSVB, with an active volunteer force operating within the shelter, thrift shop, and in the community. Work closely and collaboratively with all departments within the organization to develop and grow meaningful volunteer positions. Model and cultivate a culture of positive partnerships between volunteers, staff, and community members.

This position reports directly to the Director of Operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Create and develop volunteer programs aligned with the mission and strategic goals of HSVB and in cooperation with the departments throughout the organization.
Recruitment

o Develop a recruitment plan for attracting and retaining volunteers.

o Networking with various community groups and leaders to inform them about the need for volunteers and the opportunities available.

o Reach out to businesses and corporations to recruit for work groups and ‘Day of Caring’ type of promotions.

o Design an orientation and introduction to the organization that is engaging and promotes commitment.

o Coordinate with other departments to schedule additional training for the onboarding of volunteers.

Relationship-building:

o Foster an environment that embraces diversity, inclusion, development, and connection.

o Serve as volunteers’ main point of contact and respond to all inquiries quickly and with compassion.

o Foster collaboration and trusting relationships between volunteers, employees, and the community.

o Develop and implement strategies to ensure HSVB volunteers feel recognized, valued, and supported.

o Identify and develop volunteers to consider for leadership opportunities.

o Produce volunteer newsletter and utilize other outreach communication tools to increase volunteer engagement.

o Evaluate volunteer performance and provide constructive feedback when needed using empathy and firmness as appropriate.

o Always represent HSVB in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.

Organization:

o Develop and maintain written descriptions of volunteer roles and responsibilities, volunteer manuals and SOPs.

o Track and accurately report on volunteer data, including hours and number of volunteers.

o Manage comprehensive recruitment, intake, orientation, and training of all volunteers throughout their tenure at HSVB, including inventory, supplies, and safety equipment.

o Ensure volunteer adherence to policies and procedures and intervene when necessary to resolve noncompliance.

Participate in all aspects of volunteer management and communication.
Utilize various software platforms to manage volunteers and activities.
Keep the Director of Operations and CEO informed of program concerns, personnel issues, departmental progress, and other issues relevant to the safety and management of the department.
Prepare reports and keep statistics as requested by the Leadership Team.
Other duties and projects as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements:

Must be comfortable and proficient (or willing to become proficient) in animal-handling situations and have a strong desire to help animals and people, and a commitment to life-saving programs and services.
Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to communicate in a friendly and professional manner with a variety of individuals representing the public, board members, volunteers, donors, and employees.
Availability to work weekends and evenings.
Demonstrated ability to exhibit sound judgment and handle confidential matters.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
High School Diploma or GED required and a minimum of 1 year experience in the community outreach and engagement or volunteer management.
