The Technical Services Assistant helps library materials move accurately and efficiently from order to shelf and, when appropriate, out of the collection. This position receives and processes new materials, maintains item and order information in the library’s integrated library system, and supports weeding and collection-maintenance projects.
The position also provides scheduled coverage at public service points, answers telephone and email inquiries, shelves materials, and assists with other daily library operations. Work is performed under general supervision and follows established library policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive, unpack, count, and inspect shipments of books and other library materials.
- Compare materials with purchase orders, packing slips, and vendor records; report shortages, damage, substitutions, and other discrepancies.
- Record the receipt of materials, maintain accurate receiving documentation, and route invoices for review and payment.
- Prepare materials for circulation by applying barcodes, labels, stamps, covers, protective materials, and other required identifiers.
- Check completed materials for accuracy and appearance before routing them to library locations or placing them in the collection.
- Perform minor cleaning and repair of materials and maintain processing supplies.
- Create, verify, and update item-level information, including locations, statuses, and circulation settings, in the integrated library system.
- Identify incomplete or inaccurate records and refer questions to the appropriate staff member.
- Support weeding projects using approved criteria, reports, or withdrawal lists.
- Withdraw authorized materials from the integrated library system and prepare them for transfer, sale, recycling, or other approved disposition.
- Assist with inventories, missing-item searches, shelf reading, collection shifting, and routine reports or statistics.
- Provide scheduled coverage at library service points, including checking materials in and out, processing holds, and assisting with routine patron account questions.
- Help patrons locate materials and provide basic assistance with the library catalog, public computers, printers, copiers, and other library equipment.
- Answer routine questions in person, by telephone, and by email; refer questions requiring additional authority or expertise.
- Shelve and retrieve materials accurately and help maintain orderly collection and public service areas.
- Provide courteous, equitable, and welcoming service while protecting patron privacy and confidentiality.
- Work cooperatively with library staff, participate in training, and adapt to changing procedures and service needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, library receiving, materials processing, item-record maintenance, and collection-maintenance procedures.
- Familiarity with alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
- Ability to learn and accurately use an integrated library system and other databases.
- Proficiency with email, word processing, spreadsheets, scanners, printers, and standard office technology.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to compare purchase orders, packing slips, invoices, item records, and labels accurately.
- Ability to organize work, manage competing priorities, follow established procedures, and resolve routine discrepancies.
- Ability to communicate clearly and courteously in person, in writing, by telephone, and by email.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, service-oriented team.
- Commitment to providing respectful and welcoming service to patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience demonstrating the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. A typical qualifying background includes a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience involving library work, materials processing, inventory or receiving, detailed database entry, administrative support, or customer service.
Experience in a public-facing service environment is preferred but not required. Public library experience is a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Regularly sit, stand, and walk for varying or extended periods.
- Frequently reach, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, and turn while processing, retrieving, and shelving materials.
- Retrieve and shelve materials from floor level to above shoulder height, using an approved step stool when necessary.
- Frequently handle books and perform repetitive hand and finger movements associated with keyboarding, scanning, labeling, covering, and processing.
- Occasionally lift and carry boxes, bins, supplies, or library materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Push, pull, and maneuver loaded book carts on level indoor surfaces.
- Read fine print, labels, barcodes, packing documents, and information displayed on computer screens.
- Work in an indoor library environment with moderate noise, frequent interruptions, regular public interaction, and occasional exposure to book dust.

HOURS
This is a part-time, 24-hours per week position. The schedule may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours based on library operating and coverage needs. Hours of operation at the Fishersville Branch are Monday through Saturday, 8:30AM to 8:00PM. The position is on-site and in-person.
HOURLY WAGE
$16.22/hour
