Position Summary

The Shelter Caretaker is responsible for providing consistent, high-quality daily care for resident cats and maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment throughout the entire shelter.

The Shelter Caretaker is a trained staff position responsible for comprehensive animal care duties across all shelter spaces, including resident cat areas, kitten areas, meet and greet rooms, medical spaces, isolation, and quarantine areas.

This position supports shelter operations through animal husbandry, sanitation, medication administration, health monitoring, transportation support, and adherence to established animal care and disease prevention protocols.

Shelter Caretakers represent Pet Pride’s mission through compassion, reliability, teamwork, attention to detail, and commitment to the animals in our care.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

· Provides daily care for resident cats and kittens including feeding, fresh water, enrichment, socialization, and monitoring according to established shelter procedures.

· Provides care across all assigned shelter areas including meet and greet rooms, intake areas, isolation, quarantine, and other animal housing spaces.

· Handles and interacts with cats using safe, compassionate, and appropriate handling techniques consistent with Pet Pride training and animal care standards.

· Observes cats for changes in appetite, behavior, litter box habits, appearance, signs of illness, stress, or injury and promptly communicates concerns to veterinary or shelter leadership staff.

· Administers medications and treatments as trained and directed by veterinary staff.

· Assists with monitoring medication compliance and communicates concerns regarding medication administration or animal health.

· Assists with safely transporting cats to and from veterinary appointments.

· Supports movement of cats throughout the shelter according to established procedures and direction from shelter leadership.

· Completes daily cleaning and sanitation of animal housing areas throughout the entire shelter following established disease prevention and cleaning protocols.

· Cleans and maintains cat rooms, condos, cages, kitten areas, isolation spaces, quarantine areas, meet and greet rooms, and other assigned animal care spaces.

· Cleans and disinfects litter boxes, feeding supplies, enrichment items, bedding, carriers, and equipment according to shelter standards.

· Completes laundry, dishes, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, trash removal, and other tasks necessary to maintain shelter cleanliness.

· Performs ongoing spot cleaning throughout the day to ensure all public and animal areas remain clean, organized, and welcoming.

· Follows appropriate sanitation procedures to reduce disease transmission and maintain the health and safety of shelter animals.

· Restocks supplies and communicates inventory, facility, or maintenance needs to appropriate staff.

· Works collaboratively with Shelter Associates, veterinary staff, and volunteers to ensure animal care, cleaning, and shelter readiness tasks are completed according to established standards.

· Supports preparation of animal spaces for incoming cats and kittens.

· Assists with maintaining organization and readiness of shelter areas, supplies, and equipment.

· Completes assigned tasks independently while recognizing when questions, concerns, or additional support are needed.

· Works collaboratively alongside volunteers and directs questions or training needs to appropriate shelter staff.

· Participates in ongoing training and follows all shelter policies, procedures, and animal care protocols.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

· High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

· Previous animal care, shelter, veterinary, cleaning, or related experience preferred.

· Compassion for animals and commitment to Pet Pride’s mission.

· Ability and willingness to learn animal care procedures, medication administration, disease prevention protocols, and safe handling techniques.

· Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and care.

· Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and complete responsibilities throughout the shelter.

· Ability to communicate animal health observations and operational concerns clearly.

· Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with staff and volunteers.

Work Environment

· Works directly with cats and kittens of varying temperaments, ages, behaviors, and medical conditions.

· Works in general population, kitten, medical, isolation, and quarantine environments.

· Administers medications and may work around vaccines, syringes, medical supplies, and biohazardous materials.

· Uses cleaning and disinfecting agents regularly.

· Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and performing physical tasks throughout the workday.

· May be required to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

· May transport animals using a personal or shelter vehicle as assigned.

· Schedule includes weekends and holidays as needed.

Pay: $16.00 - $16.50 per hour
