K&K fabricates skid-mounted equipment for the oil and gas industry — pressure vessels, piping systems, compressors, and production equipment. We are looking for a Designer/Drafter to join our drafting team at our Victoria shop.
This position is open to a range of experience levels. Responsibilities are assigned according to what a candidate is qualified to do at hire, and expand as skills develop. Candidates with steel fabrication drafting experience will be given strong consideration; candidates who are early in their career and show aptitude will be trained in house.
Core Responsibilities
Take customer-supplied drawings — including PDFs and hand markups — and produce accurate 2D CAD files for parts to be cut on our CNC waterjet. Nest those parts using our nesting software, estimate cut times and material requirements for job costing and estimating, and hand off completed files to the waterjet technician. Support the drafting team with drawing revisions, plotting, and file management.
Additional Responsibilities (Assigned Based on Experience and Demonstrated Ability)
Produce 2D and 3D CAD models of skid-mounted equipment for fabrication and for estimating. Develop shop drawings including piping isometrics, P&IDs, structural drawings for skids, walkways, and stair assemblies, and pressure vessel drawings. Generate bills of material and material take-offs to support estimating and purchasing.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Working knowledge of 2D CAD and basic geometric construction
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, including customer-supplied PDFs and markups
- Willingness and ability to learn our nesting and CAD software
- Attention to detail — our drawings drive material purchases and shop cuts, and errors carry real cost
- Ability to work on site in Victoria, Texas
Preferred Qualifications
Education — Associate degree in drafting or design technology is preferred. A drafting certificate, or drafting coursework completed in college or high school, is also valued. Relevant work experience as a drafter or designer may be accepted in place of formal education.
Experience — Drafting experience in steel fabrication is preferred, in any of the following: structural, piping, or pressure vessels. Experience producing other manufacturing or industrial drawings — machine and part drawings, civil drawings, or diagrams such as P&IDs and electrical schematics — is also valuable.
Software — We use BricsCAD. Experience with BricsCAD is preferred. Experience with AutoCAD, DraftSight, or a similar platform transfers directly to BricsCAD. Experience with parametric modeling software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Solid Edge, or Fusion 360, or with BIM software such as Revit or Navisworks, counts as relevant industry experience, though it carries less weight than 2D CAD experience.
Other — Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is useful for take-off and bill of material work.
