Full Job Description

SUMMARY : This is responsible administrative work involving support of library operation of a branch library. Major job functions include patron assistance, program planning, training of staff and general circulation and operations functions. The incumbent in this position may be assigned specific responsibilities for circulation, computers or children’s programming. Work is performed under general supervision and the employee works with independence to initiate and carry out projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include but are not limited to:
Providing service to the general public and library staff by explaining library policies, procedures, and services; assisting patrons in locating items; orienting new users to library
Providing direction and training for new library assistants and/or other library staff
Assisting patron in use of Unicorn computer system and CD-ROM workstations; may conduct training for library employees and the general public
Monitoring and maintaining reserved book listings and notifying patrons of arrival and availability of reserved books
May supervise and schedule daily operations of front desk by ensuring appropriate staff coverage to greet and assist the public
May plan and conduct children’s programming for the library such as story hour, reading clubs and special events
May serve as liaison between school system and library
May evaluate and select children’s books and resources for purchase
May troubleshoot computers and peripherals; may train staff in new library automation changes or system updates
Receiving, opening, checking, and processing new acquisitions for delivery to libraries
Serving as customer service resource for patrons and staff on questions, issues and problems relating to library policy, procedure, and services
Generating various statistical reports from Unicorn software system and submits to librarian for planning and reporting purposes
Performing duties associated with the maintenance, evaluation and management of audio visual materials to include: audio and video tapes, compact discs and other equipment
Interacting with vendors and suppliers regarding books, supplies and other materials; returning defective books to vendors
Working circulation desk, shelving books and providing reference assistance in absence of Reference Associate
All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents
Performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

· High school diploma or General Educational Development Certificate (GED)

o Highly preferred - bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major field of study in a related discipline

· Two years of professional related work experience
· An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be 18 years of age or older

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

· Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) if assigned job duties requiring the use of a vehicle

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of library operations, policies, procedures, terminology, and materials
Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and equipment
Knowledge of mathematical computations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals Knowledge of program development
Knowledge of program participants’ interests, abilities, and behavior
Knowledge of specialized software, materials, terminology, and forms essential to the assignment
Skill in effective inter-personal and public relations and customer service; excellent oral and written communication skills to satisfactorily resolve conflicts and issues, and to explain established policies and procedures to employees and the general public
Skill in creating, maintaining, and organizing accurate, detailed, and complete records in accordance with standard record-keeping practices
Skill in performing tasks which require attention to detail, and completing assigned jobs efficiently and correctly
Skill in planning, prioritizing, and organizing work; ability to handle multiple work assignments efficiently, accurately, and professionally; skill in planning, prioritizing, organizing, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others
Skill in the use of personal computers, MS Office Suite, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing; typing and entering data into a computer system accurately and efficiently
Ability to apply common sense to understand, follow, and complete verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate and interact clearly and effectively with all those contacted in the course of work in a professional and courteous manner, both orally and in writing; establishing and maintaining effective, professional, and cordial working relationships
Ability to demonstrate compassion and respect in client interactions, with disabled individuals and others needing special assistance; ability to deal effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Ability to work in a team setting
Ability to work independently in the absence of specific instructions or direct supervision
Ability to supervise, train, and motivate staff
Ability to plan and implement library programs

WORK SCHEDULE:

This position includes nights and weekends.
