Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Heating and Air Conditioning Technician to maintain, diagnose, and repair a wide variety of HVAC equipment.
This position will be filled as an HVAC Technician I HVAC Technician II depending on qualifications of the selected candidates.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Maintain and repair air handling units, packaged roof top units, gas furnaces, pumps, motors, valves, bearing assemblies, boilers, chillers, exhaust fans, heat pumps, vav units, dedicated outside air units, variable frequency drives, heat exchangers, mini-split systems, hydronic piping systems, geo-thermal heat pumps, and VRF systems
Replace and repair piping, valves, and compressors
Operate building automation systems using a laptop computer
Clean ductwork, vents, replace air filters, and fabricate sheet metal
Order parts, equipment, and supplies
Contact customers, contractors, and vendors. Maintain an open line of communication with them.
Perform daily building checks on HVAC systems within assigned buildings. Take corrective and preventive action as appropriate.
The ideal candidate will have broad experience in equipment replacement including rooftop units, compressors, and water/geo-thermal heat pumps. Proficient in maintaining pumps, motors, gas furnaces, and commercial refrigeration systems with strong knowledge of building automation systems and variable frequency drives. A self-starter who can independently manage projects from start to finish, with strong communication and customer service skills.

Minimum Requirements:
HVAC Tech I Minimum Qualifications: High school or GED plus two (2) years’ experience in fields, such as heating and air conditioning repair and maintenance, which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as air conditioning mechanic helper, heating/air conditioning/refrigeration technician, or HVAC apprentice; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
HVAC Tech II Minimum Qualifications: High school or GED plus four (4) years’ experience in fields, such as heating and air conditioning repair and maintenance, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as Heating and Air Conditioning Technician I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial drivers license. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Successful completion of pre-employment physical.
