Day to Day Job Duties
Supervision
Provide leadership/supervision of full-time/part-time personal trainers to include hiring, training, professional development, mentoring, evaluating and disciplining
Oversee multiple recreation centers Personal Training programming
Facilitate work schedules that are appropriate to the team’s programming and participation needs while remaining within budget
Handle difficult interpersonal working relationships with employees and the public
Assist staff with problem solving to facilitate effective programming
Must possess the ability to promote teamwork and collaborate with multiple work units
Responsible for ensuring Personal Training is safely executed and effectively planned, coordinated and evaluated
Ensure that cost recovery goals are made for the budget year
Report monthly, quarterly and yearly progress of all established goals
Budget/Statistics
Effectively utilize and track resources, including payroll
Project, track and meet revenue and expenditure targets
Monitor and purchase equipment and supplies for program in compliance with city procurement processes
Prepare required reports and documents
Prepare statistical data for budgetary purposes ensuring completion with accuracy and submitted in a timely manner
Utilize microcomputers (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Oracle, ActiveNet, VBWorkday and databases for financials/programs
Customer Service
Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers in both written and oral forms
Ability to coach staff how to provide excellent customer service while promoting our programs and services
Must possess the ability to promote teamwork and serve as a catalyst for a positive work environment
Serve as onsite lead in absence of Recreation Specialist I
Provide direct service hours including, but not limited to: 5-10 hours/week personal training clients, as well as filling in for staff as needed
Ensure effective and timely communication is utilized to provide accurate information to the public
Serve as an Alpha I employee and First Responder
Requires a current and valid Driver’s license
Requires a current Nationally Recognized Certification in Personal Training with a minimum of 6 years’ experience.
This position requires a First Responder Certification or must obtain within four (4) months of hire date and maintain the certification.
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
Preferences
In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.
Current Nationally Recognized Certification in group fitness and/or wellness programming
Current First Responder Certification
Experience supervising multiple staff and locations in the fitness and wellness field, to include hiring, training and performance management
Experience developing and implementing personal training and wellness programs for individuals and groups
Experience with budgets to include expenditure, revenue tracking and meeting established targets specifically with fitness & wellness programs
Schedule
The work schedule associated with this position varies to facilitate group fitness programing needs. Shifts could include early mornings beginning at 5:00 a.m. or late evenings until 9:30 p.m., and weekend shifts.
Work location may change based on operational needs on a rotating basis.
The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled at other facilities. Schedules will be adjusted to meet the needs of the Personal Training program. All employees may be expected to work hours more than their normally scheduled hours, overtime, split shifts or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.
Training
As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided an approximate training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.
Alpha I
The position you are applying for is designated as Alpha I, requiring the selected candidate to work, regardless of the City’s operational status. All employees may be expected to work hours more than their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field and two (2) years of experience as a recreation supervisor; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to six (6) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, and associated with such positions as recreation supervisor. May be required to have a current and valid driver’s license. May require a Commercial driver’s license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work varied hours, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel-toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. Alpha I Status: Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status. Special Requirements: for Aquatics Only: Must possess valid certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Occasionally to frequently required to lifeguard during times of staff shortage. Lifeguarding duties include: providing a safe swimming environment, enforcing rules, rescuing anyone in danger of drowning, administering first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen and use of AED. Special Requirements: for Early Childhood Programs Only: Must be at least 21 years of age and meet the current minimum program director staff qualifications as listed in the Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers document published by the Department of Social Services, Commonwealth of Virginia. Special Requirements: for School-Based Programs Only: State requirements for positions in the school-based programs mandate that these six (6) years include a teaching certificate, bachelors degree or associates degree in a child-related field from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of programmatic experience in the group care of children. Special Requirements: for Therapeutic Recreation Only: Must possess a national certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist - Professional level. Special Requirements: for Fitness/Wellness Only: Must possess a nationally accredited certification in Personal Training and/or Group Fitness Instruction and/or Wellness/Nutritional Coaching from ACSM, ACE, NASM, or comparable. Certification must be recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
