Job Summary:
The Quality Control Inspector is responsible for ensuring structural steel fabrication and welding activities meet company quality standards, project specifications, AWS requirements, and Quality Management System (QMS) procedures throughout the manufacturing process.
This role performs in-process and final inspections on structural steel components, verifies weld quality and dimensional accuracy, and supports production teams in maintaining compliance across fabrication, welding, material traceability, and finishing operations. The position works closely with production, welding, engineering, and quality leadership to support continuous improvement, reduce rework, and ensure products meet customer and industry requirements in a fast-paced manufacturing environment utilizing robotics and automation.
Responsibilities:
- Perform in-process and final inspections of structural steel components, weldments, assemblies, and fabricated materials to ensure compliance with project specifications, AWS standards, shop drawings, and company quality requirements
- Inspect welding operations including fit-up, weld profiles, weld size, weld continuity, and visual weld acceptance criteria
- Verify fabrication dimensions, hole locations, material orientation, and assembly accuracy using tape measures, squares, calipers, and other inspection tools
- Support quality oversight of robotic welding systems and automated fabrication equipment to ensure consistent weld quality and production standards
- Identify, document, and communicate non-conforming materials, welds, or fabrication issues requiring corrective action or rework
- Coordinate with welders, fitters, operators, supervisors, and engineering teams to resolve quality concerns and maintain production flow
- Review and maintain inspection records, weld documentation, material traceability records, and quality reports in accordance with QMS procedures
- Verify proper identification and traceability of steel materials, assemblies, and weldments throughout production
- Confirm received materials meet procurement specifications and validate mill certifications and heat number traceability requirements
- Perform dimensional inspections and support layout verification throughout fabrication and assembly processes
- Support non-destructive testing (NDT) activities and coordinate additional testing requirements when necessary
- Ensure current drawings, revisions, weld maps, and work instructions are available and utilized on the production floor
- Monitor calibration status of inspection tools and quality equipment
- Participate in root cause investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives related to welding and fabrication quality
- Assist with internal audits and support compliance with AWS, AISC, and company quality standards
Qualifications:
- Experience: 3+ years of quality control inspection experience in structural steel fabrication, welding, or heavy manufacturing environments. Experience with AISC, AWS, or CWB certifications is a plus.
- Education: AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months
- NDT certification or experience with NDT methods
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in welding, fabrication, or quality inspection preferred
- Experience performing visual weld inspections and dimensional inspections in a fabrication environment required
- Familiarity with AWS welding standards, AISC fabrication requirements, and structural steel quality practices a plus
- Experience supporting robotic welding systems or automated fabrication equipment preferred
- Working knowledge of material traceability, weld documentation, and QMS procedures
- Ability to read and interpret: Structural steel drawings, Weld symbols, Fabrication drawings, Inspection documents, Specifications
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to [e.g., 50 pounds] regularly.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions common to a manufacturing facility (e.g., varying temperatures, noise levels, potential for dust/debris, wet floors).
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating equipment and handling supplies.
Work Schedule:
- Full-time: Monday-Friday, 1st Shift (7:00am – 4:00pm), 2nd Shift (2:00pm – 10:00pm)
- Depending on production needs, some overtime and weekend work may be necessary.
